Homewood Man Guilty of Stabbing 3-year-old Son to Death

An argument between Gregory Sandifer and his girlfriend escalated to Sandifer stabbing the woman—and his son.

A Homewood man was convicted Tuesday in the 2011 stabbing death of his 3-year-old son and the sexual assault of his mother.

Gregory J. Sandifer, 27, was found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated unlawful restraint. Sandifer committed the acts during an attack in Chicago's Austin community.

Prosecutors said Sandifer and his girlfriend were arguing at her apartment in the 5000 block of West Division Street. When she went to leave, Sandifer came at her with a knife, then sexually assaulting her. He stabbed her four times, before she was able to escape out a window. She flagged down police, but Sandifer had already stabbed his son Jaivon multiple times, killing him.
