Daughter Shoplifts Under Mom’s Nose

A Kmart loss prevention officer watched a female juvenile, accompanied by her apparently unwitting mother, place items in her purse and exit the store at 17550 Halsted St. without paying, according to a police report. The officer then went outside and found the girl with her mother, father and two siblings, and asked the family to come to the store's loss prevention office, police said. “Several” boxes of merchandise, valued at $48.93, were then recovered from the juvenile's purse, according to the report. The Kmart employee told police that the mother appeared unaware of her daughter's shoplifting because she herself was shopping. The juvenile received a citation for theft.

Quarrel Over Mystery Hickey Nets Charges

A Homewood man who appeared at his residence with a hickey on his neck was charged with domestic battery following a quarrel, police said. Joseph Bandy 38, of the 1800 block of Maple, argued with a woman who questioned him about the mystery love bite, police said. Bandy then pushed that woman, causing her to stagger backward, according to the report. Bandy was charged with one count of domestic battery.

Woman Shoplifts in Personalized Shirt

A Kmart security officer saw a woman wearing a red shirt with "Shia" emblazoned across the front, exiting the store at 17550 Halsted without paying for several items, police said. Myshia Brewster, 21, of the 16000 block of Plymouth Drive in Markham, and Jonathan Wise, 21, of the 18000 block of Wentworth in Lansing, both were charged with retail theft. One bottle of Grey Goose, valued at $34.99, one bottle of Patron tequila, valued at $45.99, and two items of clothing were recovered from Brewster's purse, police said. The total value of the items was listed as $120.96. Brewster and Wise are scheduled to appear in court in Markham on Sept. 14.

Wallet Stolen from Unlocked Car

A Homewood man told police someone burglarized his vehicle, which had been left unlocked in his driveway. The man's wallet was stolen, along with his credit cards, Social Security card, union painter's card and Illinois driver's license, according to the report. The man told investigators that he then canceled his credit cards, got a new driver's license and contacted the Social Security administration.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 3

Beagle Bites Two Juveniles

An irate, 35-pound, gray and black Homewood beagle named Mojo bit two female juveniles in a single day, according to a police report. In the first incident, a juvenile was at the home where the dog resides when she was bitten on the wrist, police said. The girl received medical treatment. In the second incident, around 8:15 p.m. that same day, Mojo entered a neighbor's yard and bit a resident's daughter as she played in the driveway, according to the report. That juvenile was treated for bites on her right shoulder and left thigh, police said. The dog's owner said the beagle's rabies shot was current, according to the report. Police issued the owner a dog bite card and urged that individual to consult Mojo's veterinarian. 

Unlocked Bikes Stolen at Apollo Park

Two brothers left their bikes unattended at Apollo Park, at Morgan Street and Bowling Green Drive, during a football practice and later discovered them stolen, police said. The first bike is described as a brown and white, 22-inch BMX Mongoose, valued at $75. The second bike is described as an orange and tan Next Thrasher BMX with pegs on the rear wheels, valued at $50.

Homewood Woman Charged in Zantac Theft

A 58-year-old Homewood woman was charged with retail theft for allegedly stealing 20 boxes of Pepcid and Zantac from the pharmacy department of Jewel-Osco, 3153 183rd St. Eileen Pearson, of the 3300 block of Magnolia Road, was observed taking the over-the-counter medications from the shelves, then concealing them in her purse and exiting the store without paying, according to the report. The value of the items was given as $290.80. Pearson is scheduled to appear in Markham court on Sept. 14.
