Homewood Police Blotter: Biking for Beer, Headache for Tylenol Thief, No Sign of Spring

Homewood police reports, March 29 - April 6.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6

Big Headache, Ulcers for Tylenol Thief

A Homewood Kmart security agent monitoring a closed-circuit camera system observed a man taking three boxes of Prilosec and four boxes of Tylenol from store shelves and concealing them beneath his jacket, according to police. According to the report, after the man left the store without replacing the items or paying for them, the store agent alerted police. Homewood police said they caught Calvin M. Baker, 44, of Glenwood, clutching the medications in the Home Depot parking lot. Baker is scheduled to appear in Markham court May 19 on one charge of retail theft, according to police. Cost of the over-the-counter medications is said to be $104.96.

A Riverdale woman created her own "blue-light specials" at the Homewood Kmart by switching price tags on three pairs of pants valued at $12.99 each, as well as two packages of $9.99 sleep pants, so that they scanned at just $1.99 apiece, according to police.  Police say the store videotape shows that Tracie Johnson, 33, also hid a smart iron, a "Toy Story" figure, a boy's belt and two packs of Hanes boxer shorts by placing them under children and blankets in her shopping cart. Johnson was arrested after checking out and failing to pay full price for the switched items, and paying nothing for the merchandise concealed under the kids, according to police. 

Burglar steals 50-inch Flat-Screen TV

A Homewood woman was upset to discover her 50-inch LG flat-screen television valued at $2,000 was missing after a person or persons apparently entered through a sliding glass door in her apartment, according to police. Police said she believes the theft occurred after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night and  before she awoke at 12:30 a.m., when she realized her television had vanished.

SATURDAY, APRIL 2

Mirror, Mirror on the Ground ...

A person or persons unknown broke the glass, driver's side mirrors of three vehicles parked on the 18000 block of Loomis Avenue sometime between midnight and 10:36 a.m. on April 2, according to police. 

No Sign of Spring

A Homewood homeowner attempted to beautify his property in the 1200 block of Olive Road with a flagpole displaying a green nylon flag with an upside-down derby hat and shamrock for St. Patrick's Day, as well as a colorful spring flag on his front walkway, according to police. However, when he came out to inspect his flags the morning of April 2, the St. Patrick's Day banner was gone, and there was no sign of spring, according to police. Police say the total value of the seasonal flags and pole is $45.

FRIDAY, APRIL 1

Window Smashed, Purse Snatched

After a Flossmoor woman went into the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet Club, a person or persons unknown smashed out the front, driver's side window and took her red purse, police said. Upon being alerted to the theft, the woman said her purse contained her driver's license, keys, cash and her Carson's, Macy's and Kohl's retail credit cards, according to police.

Bicycling for Beer, Walking Home

A thirsty Flossmoor man rode his Schwinn High Plains mountain bike to the Homewood liquor store Friday night around 11:30 p.m., according to police. He then observed another man, described as being around 6-foot, 205 pounds, wearing a white shirt with a paisley pattern, taking his bike without his consent and riding it southbound through the parking lot, according to police. The Flossmoor man gave chase to his bike, which had a milk crate bolted to the rear, without success, according to police. Police said they have no more information about the missing $200 bike or the suspect.

THURSDAY, MARCH 31

Violent Hoosier

Police said an Indiana man apparently punched his ex-girlfriend black and blue and dragged her by the hair around her Homewood home after he'd been drinking. Investigators said he also kicked a hole in the rear door of the residence. Donol E. Clark, 41, of 4113 Ravenswood Dr. in Crown Point, Ind., was charged with domestic battery.  

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30

Fraudulent Charges

A Chicago Heights woman received a disturbing automated message from TCF Bank that said her elderly mother's Visa card was being used for questionable purchases, according to police. The woman's mother resides in Manor Care assisted living facility, 935 Maple Rd. An estimated $1,700 in fraudulent charges were made on the card, according to the report.
