SATURDAY, MAY 21

Hammond Woman Smashes Windshield, Police Say

A 20-year-old Hammond woman was charged with criminal damage to property after her friend complained that she cracked his windshield, according to the report. The friend said he did not know why Tia A. Calderon, of Ash Avenue, broke his windshield as the two sat in his car. Calderon has a June 29 court date in Markham.

Bloody Homewood Man Charged

A 41-year-old Homewood man was charged with disorderly conduct after he was found walking in a confused state near a Ridge Road address police said. Michael D. Burge, of the 1300 block of Idlewild Lane, was found falling down, with his knees, elbows and face bleeding and scraped from earlier falls, police said. Burge was taken to South Suburban Hospital for treatment.

Trespassing Hazel Crest Man Charged

A Hazel Crest man was charged with criminal trespass after going to the residence of a Homewood woman and leaving her doors ajar, police said. Willard S. Brooks, 33, of the 2700 block of Turtlecreek Drive, has been arrested "numerous" times for going to that woman's address, according to the report. Officers recognized Brooks and stopped him near the 2800 block of Birch Road, asking what he was doing in the area, police said. Initially, Brooks told the officer that he was on a search for a missing keychain, then confessed he had been in the back yard of the Homewood woman's residence. Upon searching that area, police found three doors standing open and contacted the woman, who told them all were closed when she left the property, police said.

Homewood Man Charged With Animal Cruelty

A Homewood man was charged with animal cruelty after admitting he pepper-sprayed his neighbor's pitbull although the animal was in its own yard, police said. Jimmy L. Seals, 54, of the 1900 block of Terrace Road, admitting spraying the dog, saying he was angry that it had attacked him in the past, police said.  The dog's owner called police after witnessing Seals, while riding on a lawn tractor, lean over his fence and spray the dog, police said. It does not appear that he ever filed a dog-bite complaint with Homewood police, according to the report. Seals is due in Markham Court on Aug. 8.

Bank Paintball

A Homewood bank was pelted with paintballs recently, a bank employee told police. The employee said four yellow paintballs were shot against the north side of the Great Lakes Bank building at 18600 Dixie Highway, striking the brick facade and three windows. The employee told police the bank wanted to document the paintball strikes.

THURSDAY, MAY 19

Cosmetics Shoplifting Charges

An East Hazel Crest woman was charged with retail theft after leaving the Homewood Kmart store without paying for store cosmetics in her purse, police said. Cortney R. Baldwin, 21, of 1300 block of 175th Street, was observed by a store security officer placing cosmetics worth $70.07 in her handbag, then leaving the store without paying, according to the report.

Currency Exchange Stuck With Rubber Checks

An employee of the Homewood Currency Exchange, 807 Maple Road, told police a woman has cashed two phony checks at the business, police said. The checks were written for $800 and $275 on April 11 and 14, according to the report.
