Homewood Police Blotter: Mason Jar Cannabis and Hard Times at Homewood Hotel

SUNDAY, JUNE 12

Mason Jars Full of Cannabis

A Homewood man was charged after police discovered his car contained cannabis stored in mason jars, according to a police report. Gregory A. Hale, 33, of the 1100 block of 183rd Street,  was pulled over at 1800 Gottschalk after police noted he was missing a taillight. While talking to Hale, the officer noted an odor of cannabis in the vehicle, then noted a clear mason jar filled with a green, leafy substance in an open storage compartment next to the dashboard radio, according to the report. Hale told police he had a second Mason jar containing a pipe and a small amount of cannabis in a backpack in the rear seat of the vehicle, police said. Hale has a July 13 date in Markham Court.

Short Walk in Stolen Sandals

Three juveniles were cited with retail theft after walking out of Kohl's, 17620 Halsted St., with stolen footwear, police said. The store security officer said that around 3:25 p.m., the three walked into the store's footwear section and took the footwear out of boxes, with two juveniles donning Adidas sandals, and the third wearing Nike sandals, according to the report. The total value of the items was given as $59.97. The three are now banned from the store, police said. 

Possession of Cocaine

A 27-year-old Chicago Heights man was charged with possession of cocaine after being pulled over on a traffic stop. Jose Juarez, of the 200 block of Interocean Avenue, was pulled over on Halsted Street when an officer noticed of a bag full of white powder on the floorboard, according to the report. Juarez also admitted driving without a driver's license, police said. 

SATURDAY, JUNE 11

Missing Dinero at Taco Bell

A manager at Taco Bell, 17601 Halsted St., said that a bank deposit envelope containing $1,162 was missing. Although the envelope was placed in the store's drop box, it was not found with other deposits when that drop box was opened, according to the report.

Jeep Metal Theft Near Great American Bagel

A woman parked near Great American Bagel, 3003 W. 183rd St., was the latest victim in a series of Southland metal thefts, police said. The woman was inside the Homewood bagel store when she was alerted by a customer that someone was tampering with her 2001 Jeep Cherokee. When the woman went out to investigate, she discovered that her muffler and pipe were hanging from underneath the vehicle, and her catalytic converter had been removed, according to the report. The unknown thief left behind a reciprocating saw, police said.

Homewood Homeowner Wants $300 in Quarters Back

A Homewood man on the 900 block of Elder Road discovered an unknown person or persons broke into his basement office and stole $300 in quarters that he had collected, police said.

Lord of the Rings

A Homewood man was charged with retail theft after Kmart employees said they saw him place women's rings on his fingers and wear them from the store. The employees say David W. Eaton, 48, of the 17400 block of Halsted Street, took four rings worth $49.95, according to the report.

THURSDAY, JUNE 9

Dolton Woman Charged with Retail Theft

A Dolton woman was charged with retail theft after taking clothing from Kmart, police said. Store security officers said they saw Emogene Greenwood, 69,  of the 15000 block of Diekman, putting items down her shirt and the front of her pants, according to the report. The items were valued at $83.92, police said.

Homeowner's Security Light Smashed

A Homewood homeowner told police his security light, which was mounted on a detached garage located behind the man's house on Gottschalk Avenue, was damaged. The damage is estimated at $30, according to the report.

Dirty Looks at Vision Center

A woman employed at Kirschner Eye Group, 2156 W. 183rd St., told police she was intimidated after another female employee threatened to beat her up, according to a police report. The woman told police that after she received flowers from her boyfriend, the other employee became angry, accused the man of giving her "dirty looks" and threatened to beat the woman up, police said. The intimidated woman told her supervisor, who did not act to her satisfaction, according to the report. The woman was at the Homewood Police Department recording her concerns about her co-worker when the co-worker called her to apologize. 

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8

Despairing Detroit Man Gets Homewood Help

A Detroit man staying at the Homewood Hotel called 911 stating that he was in despair and was contemplating leaping from the building, police said. Homewood Fire Department personnel responded to the hotel, 17400 Halsted St., and transported the man to South Suburban Hospital for treatment for his distress, according to the report. The man said he and his female friend were in Homewood to sell magazine subscriptions.

Lost Spare Cover 

A Tinley Park woman who dined at Aurelios's Pizza, 18162 Harwood Ave., discovered that someone took the cover off her spare tire from her 2008 Toyota. The value of the cover is estimated around $225, police said.

TUESDAY, JUNE 7

Underage Hennessey Theft

A juvenile male was issued a citation for retail theft after employees at Kmart, 17550 Halsted St., spotted him taking two bottles of Hennessey, police said. The value of the alcohol was listed at $77.48, and the juvenile was taken home from the Homewood Police Department by his mother.

Four Doors Open, Trunk Up, Keys Gone

An Ingalls Hospital employee who left his car unlocked in his driveway discovered the vehicle with all four doors open and the trunk open, according to a police report. The man then realized that keys valued at $450 and specialized hair clippers with appliances and attachments were gone, police said. The total value of the theft was estimated at $1,150.00.

FRIDAY, JUNE 3

$10,000 Phone Bill Surprises Homewood Man

A Homewood man told police he was shocked to get a call from a collection agency demanding payment on a $10,000 phone bill. The man said someone opened a Verizon wireless account in his name and ran up thousands of dollars in charges. He told officers that he thinks his identity may have been stolen when he moved from another Homewood address and failed to destroy paperwork with his personal information on it.
