Police Blotter: Attempted Robbery, Drug Charges and Retail Theft

Homewood police reports, Sept. 2-7

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 7

Cousins Charged

Keaton Van Kerken, 21, of the 400 block of Pleasant in Glenwood, and Lucas LeRose, 20, of the 300 block of S. Hunter in Thornton, each were charged with criminal damage to property and battery, bodily harm, after police said they threw a large rock at a car parked in a driveway on the 18800 block of Carson Drive. Both passenger-side windows were shattered and the person sitting inside was injured, according to police reports.

Residential Burglary

A resident of the 2700 block of Chayes Court told police someone entered their residence between noon Sept. 4 and 4:30 a.m. Sept. 6 and stole a laptop computer, a digital camera, a CD player, a TV/DVD and a speaker. There were no signs of forced entry, the report said.

Retail Theft

An employee at TMobile, 17923 Halsted St., reported noticing after closing that six new, active demo cell phones had been stolen between 7 and 8 p.m.

MONDAY, SEPT. 5

DUI

Donald Brumfield, 42, of the 8700 block of S. Hermitage in Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol content of more than .08, and having an expired registration. Police responded to 18214 Dixie Highway for a report of a drunk driver. The witness who called police said they saw the driver drive through a red light at Western Avenue and Vollmer Road then travel north in the southbound lane of Dixie Highway from Holbrook through 183rd Street, according to reports. When officers caught up to him, police said he was in his vehicle facing south on Dixie just south of Ridge.

Retail Theft

O’Dell McCullough, 23, of the 12000 block of Princeton in Chicago, was charged with retail theft after an incident at Kmart, 17550 Halsted. A store loss prevention officer told police he saw McCullough place two bottles of Grey Goose vodka and two men’s shirts in his pants and exit the store without paying. The value of the merchandise was about $112.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

Drug Possession Charges Filed

Sean Fourte, 21, of the 15900 block of Lexington in Harvey, and Kemisha Smith, 23, of the 17400 block of Park Lane in Country Club Hills, each were charged with unlawful possession of marijuana after a traffic stop at about 2:50 a.m. at 17400 Dixie Highway. Fourte also was charged with no valid driver’s license and an expired registration.

Retail Theft Charges

Police said security at Kohl’s, 17620 Halsted, reported seeing Sheldon Patrick, 19, of the 3500 block of W. Chicago Ave. in Chicago, remove clothes from racks and conceal them inside a pack he was carrying. After leaving the store without paying, police said Patrick was detained and charged with retail theft. He took a pair of jeans, a sweater, a T-shirt, a belt and a cap, total value $160, according to police reports.

Theft from Motor Vehicle

A purse containing a firearm owner's ID card, a cell phone and makeup was reportedly stolen about 2:25 p.m. from a car parked at a pump at Speedway, 18002 Halsted. The victim told police she and her boyfriend pumped gas then went inside the store to get some items and when she returned to the car, her purse was gone from the passenger’s side. The victim told police the car windows were rolled halfway down and the doors had been unlocked, according to reports.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 2

Attempted Robbery

A Homewood man told police that while he was at Walgreens, 820 W. 183rd St., at about 7:30 p.m., two males, who appeared to be in their 20s, approached him with clenched fists and demanded he empty his pockets. The victim told police when he said “no” to their demands, the two men fled the area on foot in different directions.

Criminal Damage to Vehicle

A resident of the 19100 block of Loomis reported someone broke the rear window of his van sometime between 7:45 a.m. and 10 p.m. Nothing was reported stolen. Damage was estimated at $500.
