Police Blotter: Stolen Vehicle, Possession of Cannabis

Homewood police reports, Dec. 18-23.

THURSDAY, DEC. 23

Possession of Cannabis

Leon Gilliand, 22, of the 12300 block of South Bishop in Calumet Park, and Edward Newson, 25, of 8300 South Baker in Chicago, were arrested and charged with possession of cannabis, according to police. Officers said their car was pulled over on the 17500 block of Halsted Street around 10:45 p.m. for not having any taillights. According to police, a search discovered that both men were carrying bags with less than 2.5 grams of marijuana. The men also were cited for lack of taillights, reports stated.

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 22

Shed Burglary

Someone broke into a Homewood man's backyard shed on the 18300 block of Stewart Avenue sometime between 7 a.m. Dec. 20 and 8 a.m. Dec. 22.  Police reports state the locking hinge of the shed had been broken off and the door left open, but nothing was taken. Damage to the door is estimated to be $50.

Criminal Damage to Property

A Homewood woman's basement window was broken on the 1600 block of Willow R0ad sometime between 3 p.m. Dec. 17 and 4 p.m. Dec. 20.  The estimated damage is $200.

MONDAY, DEC. 20

Unlawful Use of Weapon

During a routine traffic stop, police arrested a man, at the intersection of 183rd Street and Illinois Avenue at 1:20 a.m. The man, Gordon Jenkins, 58, of the 7700 block of Cregier in Chicago, was pulled over for speeding, according to police, and during the traffic stop, the officers discovered a weapon.  The man was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and issued citations for no rear taillight, speeding over posted limit and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Motor Vehicle Theft

A Homewood man's car was stolen at 7 a.m. on the 900 block of Elder Road. The man left his car running while taking his dog for a walk. When he returned, the car was gone. Included in the theft were a Garmin portable GPS device and two bowling balls.

SATURDAY, DEC. 18

Retail Theft

Two Eclipse MP3 players were stolen from the on Halsted Street at about 10:40 a.m.  Michael and Andre Murphy, ages 19 and 18, of the 1000 block of 153rd Place in South Holland, took the MP3 players, went to the men's bathroom and removed the devices from their packaging, police said. A security agent noticed the van the men left in and reported it to police. According to police, the men were later discovered with the stolen property. 

Battery

Neiman-Marcus Collins, 22, was arrested at 9:30 a.m. on the 18800 block of Juhlin Drive after attempting to strike his mother and her boyfriend with a banister, police said. Collins did not harm them but did damage the hallway walls, according to reports. Police said Collins took off his shirt during the investigation and threw it at an officer's face. Upon being placed in a holding cell, officers said, Collins defaced the walls. He was charged with two counts of assault, two counts of criminal damage to property and one charge of battery.
