Police Nab Man Wanted for 5 Bank Robberies

The suspect robbed the Chase Bank at 3480 W. 183rd St. last week, and is believed to be responsible for several others in the south suburbs.

A man wanted in connection with five robberies on the South Side and in the south suburbs—including one in Hazel Crest—is in custody and facing federal charges.

Michael Newson, of Blue Island, got into a jam while fleeing police during a June 18 robbery at a Calumet City bank. Police chased him down a dead-end street, forcing him to double back past the bank, and give the teller he robbed a chance to jot down his license plate number, Sun-Times Media reports. 

Newson is suspected of robbing four other banks this month, including:

  • the U.S. Bank branch at 11159 S. Kedzie Ave. in Chicago on June 9,
  • the South Division Credit Union at 9122 S. Kedzie Ave. in Evergreen Park on June 12,
  • the PNC Bank branch at 10701 S. Western Ave. on June 17,
  • Charter One branch, 1400 Torrence Ave. on June 18

Newson is in federal custody, with a June 27 court date.
