Ruse Burglars Strike Homewood Home: Blotter

MONDAY, DECEMBER 10

Home Break-In

A Homewood resident called police when she heard glass breaking from her neighbor's house shortly after 5:30 p.m. on the 18900 block of Center Ave., according to reports. Police say they observed a portion of the home’s front window to be broken our, as well as the back glass sliding door. The residents, who were sleeping upstairs during the burglary, said a purse and additional personal items were stolen, according to the report. Police say one of the victims had a voicemail on her phone that may suggest the burglar may be a personal acquaintance.

FRIDAY, DEC. 7

Home Break-in

Someone broke into a home on the 3000 block of Matthew Lane sometime between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., according to police. Reports say the burglar used an unknown device to pry open the door. Among the items stolen were a laptop computer, piggy bank and $40 of other assorted possessions, according to the report.

Ruse Burglary

Ruse-type burglars struck a home along the 1200 block of Birch Road around 3:30 p.m., according to police. Reports say a man rang the back doorbell of the home and told the owner he just moved into a home down the street. He asked for a bottle of water from the owner, which she retrieved for him, police say. When she returned, the man had entered the home and was standing in her kitchen, reports say. She kicked him out, but not before an accomplice entered through the front door, according to reports. Police say when the woman went to check her belongings, she found her fire safe with a broken lock. The first burglar is described as a 35- to 40-year-old, six-foot-tall bulky man with a heavy accent. He was wearing large, dark-framed glasses, dark workers pants and a baseball cap during the time of the burglary, according to reports.
