Snatched Catalytic Converter: Blotter

Police say the burglary happened on the night of Nov. 21.

Someone stole the catalytic converter from a car parked near the condo buildings in the 2300 block of 183rd Street, according to police.

Reports say the converter was stolen sometime between 10 p.m. on Nov. 21 and 10:30 a.m. the next day. The car was parked on the east side of the condo building, towards the north end of the lot.

The stolen converter was valued at $312.

For us dummies, will a car run without this piece of equipment? Are there sure-fire and immediate signs that it has been stolen? In advance, thanks for the info.

The car will run without the converter. When you start the vehicle however, it will run and drive pretty roughly and the check engine light will be on rather quickly after the start. The vehicle cannot pass an emissions test without the converter either.

From Edmunds.com: "If you don't happen to notice it right away, the moment you start your car, you will. The sound has been described as 'a deep loud noise,' 'an unmistakable roar,' and even like 'a Harley Davidson.'
