South Suburban DUI Arrests, April 14

Chewing gum and smoking a cigarette doesn't help one driver hide the smell of alcohol. This report and more in the week's roundup of Southland DUI reports.

 

FRANKFORT

March 20: Brett T. Scollard, 25, of the 5100 block of South Sayre Avenue in Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence and speeding, according to a report. He was arrested at about 2:50 a.m. near the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Wolf Road. Scollard is due in court on May 5.

ORLAND PARK

March 23: Brooke E. Werner, 22, of the 17700 block of Pheasant Drive in Tinley Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane use, according to a report. Police were called at about 3:10 a.m. for a possible drunken driver. An officer stopped the vehicle in the 9300 block of 143rd Street after seeing the tires cross the road lines. Werner reportedly had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. She took field sobriety tests and was arrested. Werner also allegedly refused to take a breath test. She is due in Bridgeview court on May 15.

March 23: Raegan M. Bania, 37, of the 19800 block of Center Street in Mokena, was charged with driving under the influence, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, driving without insurance, improper right turn and improper lane use and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, according to a report. Bania’s vehicle was stopped at about 12:34 a.m. near the 7300 block of Park Central Drive. Police allegedly had seen her speeding and swerve across road lines. She appeared to be masking the smell of alcohol on her breath by chewing gum and smoking a cigarette, according to the report. After performing field sobriety tests, Bania was told she failed and was arrested. She also took a breath test while in custody. Bania is due in Bridgeview court on May 7.

March 22: Tia M. Westbrook, 19, of the 12400 block of Michigan Avenue in Chicago was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, disobeying a traffic control device and crossing the median, according to a report. Westbrook was stopped for travelling 60mph in a 45mph zone at about 3:16 a.m. near 18500 LaGrange Rd. Police reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol and a faint smell of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. Westbrook was arrested after performing field sobriety tests. Police were unable to get a sufficient sample for a breath test. She is due in Bridgeview court on May 7.

PALOS HEIGHTS

April 7: Jeremy Ross, 32, of the 16000 block of South Ozark Avenue in Tinley Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, speeding and improper lane use, according to a report. Ross was stopped at about 12:47 a.m. near 12100 S. Ridgeland Ave., for speeding and improper lane use. Ross took field sobriety tests and failed.

MIDLOTHIAN

March 30: Frances A. Hobin, 37, of the 13700 block of South Lawler Avenue in Crestwood, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, according to a report. Police found Hobin asleep in her Honda CRV in the drive-through lane at Burger King, 14300 S. Cicero Ave. After trying to wake Hobin, an officer had to reach into the car to unlock the door. Hobin reportedly thought she was at White Castle, located at 147th Street and Cicero Avenue. She performed field sobriety tests, after which she was arrested. She also took a breath test while in police custody. Hobin is due in Markham court on June 13.

HOMEWOOD

April 6: Clarence Patterson, 46, of the 2300 block of Marston in Flossmoor, was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, illegal transportation of an open container and improper lane use, according to a report. Patterson was stopped at about 12:57 a.m. near the intersection of 183rd Street and Argyle Lane after police noticed his car weaving across road lines. An officer reported smelling an odor of alcohol on Patterson's breath when speaking. Police also noticed a bottle of Stock 84 brandy on the passenger side floorboard. Patterson was arrested after taking field sobriety tests. He later refused to take a breath test. Patterson is due in Markham court on April 23.
