That Guy's Riding Away on My Bike

A Metra station commuter left the train just in time to return to the bike rack and see a thief riding away on his bike, one of a string of bike thefts.

A bike owner told police he parked and locked his bike in the bike rack before boarding his train the morning of April 27. While under way soon after, he learned his appointment had been cancelled so he disembarked at the Calumet station.

As he walked back to Homewood, the man told police, he saw another man riding what appeared to be his bicycle northbound on Dixie Highway. His hunch was confirmed when he found his lock discarded about a block away.

The bike, a 26-inch silver and gold Schwinn Voyager 7-speed and the owner’s riding helmet that was attached have a combined estimated value of $410.

That was one of at least four bikes reported stolen—three of them from near the Metra Station at 18020 Harwood—between April 25 and April 30, police said.

Another of the bikes was taken after the owner entered a store in the 18600 block of Dixie Highway. The victim told police she left her bike, a 26-inch, purple Huffy 7-speed, unlocked and unattended for only five minutes while she shopped. Her bike, worth an estimated $50, was reported taken at 12:12 p.m. April 25.

Two bikes—one a lady’s purple Schwinn retro-style 6-speed valued at $400 and a blue and beige Trek Bellville valued at $600—were last seen by their owners cabled and padlocked at the Metra Station. Both were reported stolen late in the afternoon April 30.
