Flossmoor Board Approves $43,058 for Two New Police Cars

New Ford Crown Victoria police vehicles will replace two old squad cars. The new cars feature Flex Fuel and are the most fuel-efficient squad cars, according to police.

The Flossmoor Village Board voted unanimously to approve spending a little over $40,000 on two new police squad cars Tuesday night.

“I recommend … the Ford Crown Victoria vehicle to be purchased due to its size, reliability, comfort and [because] it best fits our needs [for] equipment,” said Deputy Police Chief Michael Pulec.

According to Pulec, $48,500 was budgeted for the replacement of two cars this year and any additional equipment costs. At $43,058, the purchase of the two new vehicles is over $5,000 less than the budgeted amount. The cars will replace two older squad cars in the fleet.

In regards to the vehicle purchases, Mayor Paul Braun had “green” on his mind.

“Did we look at any alternative fuel [options] or [overlook] any other environmental considerations … for the purchase of these cars?” asked Braun.

Pulec assured the Board that, in making the decision, environmental responsibility had been taken into consideration.

“The Ford Crown Victoria still offers the best [environmental advantages] compared to the Dodge and Chevy,” responded Deputy Chief Pulec. “It is a Flex-Fuel vehicle.”

According to fueleconomy.gov, a Flex-Fuel vehicle is "designed to run on gasoline or a blend of up to 85 percent ethanol (E85)."

The cars will be purchased from Landmark Ford, Inc., the company that was awarded the contract for police vehicles by the State of Illinois.
