H-F Park District Elects New President [Video]

Plus new paint jobs and a new commissioners.

We take a look at some of the items approved and discussed at the May 17 Board of Commissioners meeting.

Big Story: The H-F Park District Board of Commissioners voted to elect current Commissioner Steve Johnson as the new Park District Board President and Commissioner Sue Bertram as vice president. Johnson will be taking the place of now-former President Bob Haderlein, who just won re-election for another six-year term. Both Johnson and Bertram humbly accepted their new titles. 

Quote: Bob Haderlein said, "I want to thank everybody in this room for making (the presidency) very easy and enjoyable, you guys do a great job."

Big Story: Outgoing H-F Park District Commissioner Peter Camin said his final goodbyes before turning over his seat to incoming Commissioner Dallas Collins. Collins, along with Haderlein, beat out Camin for two available seats on the Park District Board in the April elections. Haderlein, still president at that time, thanked Camin for his service and he was given a standing ovation prior to his departure.

Quote: "It is not a right to be here," Peter Camin said. "It really is a privilege to sit here, and I've always felt that."

The request: Approval of $5,850 to be given to bid-winner, LPM Painting of Midlothian, for gazebo painting at Leavitt and Irwin Park.

What this means: Rust spots will be removed and metal frames will be rehabilitated among the two gazebos before they are primed and painted. The project comes in $4,150 under the budget of $10,000.

Vote: Unanimous, yes.

The request: Approval of $5,405 to be given to bid-winner, A Design Painting of Midlothian, for the exterior painting of the Irwin Center.

What this means: Ten exterior doors, four bay windows and all facia,  and soffit, in addition to two nearby wood sheds, will be scraped, primed, caulked and repainted. The bid comes in at $2,595 under budget.

Vote: Unanimous, yes.

The request: Approval of $13,950 to be given to bid-winner, Maverick Pools of Paletine, to complete Virginia Graeme Baker Act repairs at Lions Pool.

What this means: According to Superintendent of Parks and Planning Doug Boehm, "(The VGB Act) deals with the modification of water pressure or suction out of the pool as water is filtered or backwashed, drained or cleaned." Boehm says concrete removal, sandblasting, new concrete and drain modification are all necessary labors to comply with the VGB legislation.

Vote: Unanimous, yes.
