Rep. Davis Advances Bill to Help Women and Minority-owned Businesses
The legislation designed to help minority and women-owned businesses secure IDOT contracts will now move to the senate for further consideration.
Homewood Rep. Will Davis recently passed a bill assisting women- and minority-owned businesses in Illinois.
“Taxpayers from every community contribute to our state departments and that diversity should be reflected in the contracts that are awarded,” Davis said. “This measure has the potential to help many minority- and women-owned businesses in Illinois.”
The action comes in response to a disparity study conducted by the Illinois Department of Transportation, according to Davis’ office. It found that minority-owned businesses often have a hard time securing financing. As a result, those businesses are frequently ineligible to receive contracts. Davis-sponsored House Bill 3267 would help alleviate the problem by awarding low-interest loans to minority and women-owned businesses working with IDOT.

“IDOT is making every effort to have more contracts awarded to firms owned by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals,” IDOT Secretary Ann Schneider said. “Rep. Davis’ legislation would help us to reach our goals for diversity, allowing a more level playing field for minority and women-owned businesses to receive contracts.”
HB 3267 will now go to the state senate for further consideration.
