SD 161 Candidate Forum Coming to Parker Jr. High School

The League of Women Voters of the Homewood-Flosssmoor Area will host a candidate forum for candidates of the Flossmoor School District 161 on Tuesday, April 2, at 7 p.m. The forum will take place at 7 p.m. at Parker Junior High School.

Residents have heard the pitches from many local candidates—and now those battling for four seats on the Flossmoor School District 161 board of education will take their turn.

Incumbents Tiijanel Boyd Odom and Christine Johnson Marks, and challengers Stephen M. Paredes, Shelly Amuh and Lisa M. Harrell  will take part in the League of Women Voters Candidate Forum on Tuesday, April 2, at Parker Junior High School.

The candidate forum, which begins at 7 p.m., will offer voters a chance to hear candidates' views and thoughts on various issues within the district—and could be the last chance for candidates to make an impact before the polls open on April 9.

For more information about the candidate forum, contract the League of Women Voters of the Homewood-Flossmoor Area at (708) 828-5391.

Make sure to elect the most liberal/progressive candidates. Just look around you and see how well liberalism has served the HF community in the past. Also, make sure that the potential board members promise to vote themselves really fantastic health insurance and other perks just like the HF High School Board of Education has given to themselves.

School board members don't get paid and don't get health insurance. Do you just make this stuff up?

I for one will be voting for the challengers, in particular Stephen M. Paredes!

I Hope they consider grade centers. It has helped in homewood.

I second that! He's the only educator running!

Where is Mr Paredes a teacher?

I have found his bio online. He has had a lot of teaching jobs in the past. I wonder why he keeps jumping school to school?

HF Board of ed gets health insurance... really good health insurance... Better than the teachers....

Those who are opposed to grade centers are really saying that they don't want to work with "those children".

HF High school board members do have great medical insurance benefits. It's been that way for years. People on the board there, if they have their own business IRL, score big by being a board member. I don't think the feeder schools have benefits for their board members. That said, #161's board has always leaned heavier on the side of Western Avenue residents, no matter what their profession is. People in all areas of the district should get out the vote and have the interests of their school represented!

Also, educators, Board included, how about you teach the core subjects, and stop indoctrinating our kids with political, social and other topics that should be talked about at home? It's not your job. There is a reason why public schools, test scores and reading/math/science skills are are below sub par. Bullying awareness, SEED, peer mediation, "global warming/climate change" initiatives-blah blah blah are all about creating sheeple not productive citizens. Again, teaching academics is the job of all people involved in education. I also agree with grade centers. It will give #161 the diversity that is so important. Get on board Western Avenue!

The fact that the HFHS School Board has had Cadillac benefits for themselves and their families for all these years is disgusting. They attend one board meeting a month and get those rich benefits while many of the taxpayers in the area have no insurance at all. I think this should be investigated! This is criminal!

My name was misspelled. It is Timijanel

Clearly Mr. Paredes cannot commit to anything. He has never had tenure at a teaching position (only need 4 years at the same district). Or he can't keep a job because he is such a loose cannon or just a crappy teacher. I sure as hell don't want him on my kids board of education.
