A.P. Classes on Display at H-F High School

Area students and parents are invited to annual A.P. Showcase, an evening to explore the school's wide array of Advanced Placement® courses, which are offered in nearly every content area. The showcase will be held on Thursday, Jan. 19, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

During the past decade, H-F's A.P. program has nearly doubled in size—in both its number of classes and its student enrollment. In 2011, the College Board recognized H-F as the only school in the state of Illinois with an exemplary Advanced Placement program for its efforts in getting African-American students to succeed in A.P. classes. In 2010 and 2011, H-F had the highest number of African-American students earn at least a 3 on the A.P. Psychology exam of any school in the nation.

"We are confident that our current and incoming Homewood-Flossmoor students will continue this great tradition of academic excellence at our school," says Dr. Von Mansfield, superintendent. "We set high expectations and know that our students can meet them."
The showcase will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation by Marc Geslani, higher education manager for the College Board, who will discuss the advantages of experiencing a rigorous high school curriculum. Next, attendees can enjoy a discussion with current H-F A.P. students to hear about their experiences. Following the discussion, parents and students can meet with teachers to learn about course expectations for next year and to see typical class assignments.

"When students see for themselves exactly what taking an A.P. course entails at this event, they often realize that they are capable of successfully meeting the A.P. challenge," says Nancy Spaniak, director of curriculum, professional development and instruction.
A.P. classes offered in 2012/13 will be: Art History; Biology; Calculus/AB; Calculus/BC; Chemistry; Computer Science using Java 1; Computer Science using Java 2; Economics; English Language & Composition; English Literature & Composition; Environmental Science; European History; French 5; Human Geography; Music Theory & Composition; Physics B; Physics C; Psychology; Spanish 5; Statistics; Studio Art; U.S. Government & Politics; U.S. History; and World History.
