Smith Brought Back as H-F Girls Basketball Coach

Anthony Smith will be back as coach, following a turbulent year of controversy and distrust.

Anthony Smith will be back in the classroom—and the court—at Homewood-Flossmoor High School this fall.

“We tried to make the decision that we felt was the best," the school's Director of Human Resources and Public Relations Jodi Bryant told Sun-Times Media. "We know it’s not going to be the best decision for everybody, but it’s what we feel is the best for our students right now.”

Bryant confirmed his return as coach on Wednesday, one day after the Board of Education decided Smith — who was fired in April as both a teacher and coach over a recruiting scandal — could come back as a health and driver's education teacher at a salary of $81,446.

The IHSA cleared Smith in late April to return to coaching after investigating allegations he recruited his top summer league players from Bolingbrook to attend Homewood-Flossmoor High School. H-F students filed a lawsuit against the school, which was dropped in March.

On Tuesday night, the district released a statement:

“Smith is a top-level coach, who is inspiring, motivating and devoted to his players, as well as his students in the classroom,” the statement reads. “After reviewing all information and considering the views of many different stakeholders, the board is confident that this (allowing him to again teach) is the right decision for Homewood-Flossmoor students, athletes and the greater community.

“Our focus now is on the implementation of a comprehensive plan to remedy areas of noncompliance and to ensure agreement with IHSA rules moving forward.”

The HF Board pays Von Mansfield $295,000.00, as if he were running a multi-school North Shore District, while in fact he is running the southernmost school in the Chicago Public League. How many kids are really in the fancy IB program? You offer lots of AP courses, but how many kids actually take the test and score 4 or 5 on them. This dude has all the mental defectives on his Board hoodwinked.....

@Juvenal I agree with you but the underlying problem is that we vote these mental defectives in and we don't ever hold them accountable. So technically it is our own collective faults. Just sayin'

Actually the last couple of members have been appointed by Von after strategic "resignations" of board members who had substantial time left on their terms. This gives Von the same power over his board as a Daley or Emanuel get over the Chicago City Council. He gets to pick his Board, who then run as incumbents. As a result, there are effectively no financial controls over him. Show me another Superintentendent of a middling-performing, single-school district making $300k a year in his first superintendent job, with only a few years of experience in the position.......

That is true. Now I remember one was resigning his post for back surgery and Mr Lindstrom this year in the middle of the year. You are correct sir! Both were replaced by appointment. We are getting taken for a ride! What do you want to bet the North Building renovation comes in way over budget! We probably won't be told about that either!

When did HF join the Chicago Public League?
