WNBA Star Honored, Hoops It Up at Homewood-Flossmoor High School

More than 500 Homewood-Flossmoor students Friday witnessed a significant moment for The Chicago Sky's Elena Delle Donne.

Students at Homewood-Flossmoor High School Friday were treated to a special appearance by former NCAA All-American and current WNBA Rookie of the Year Elena Delle Donne, of the Chicago Sky.

Delle Donne stopped into the school, led a basketball clinic—and was announced as the newest Global Ambassador for the Special Olympics.

She joins a roster of athletes including NBA Rookie of the Year and NBA All-Star Damian Lillard, NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo, Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and many others as Special Olympics Global Ambassadors.

Delle Donne, whose sister was born with special needs, told students she hopes to spread awareness of "how special the special needs community can be," Sun-Times Media reports.

Her work will focus on basketball development within Special Olympics, specifically among girls.

"I want to continue to get more athletes to play, but not only that, I want to raise awareness to the general population about how incredible these individuals are and how they can make such a great impact on all of our lives,” Delle Donne told Sun-Times reporters.
