Hipchen leads Lincolns to 8-5 win over Vikings

Recap of the Vikings' June 23rd game against the Illinois Lincolns.

Chris Hipchen clubbed two home runs to carry the Illinois Lincolns (9-8) to an 8-5 win over the Southland Vikings (6-10) at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

The Lincolns got the win thanks, in large part, to Ben Mahar's dominant, eight-strikeout performance. Mahar allowed two earned runs, seven hits and three walks over 6.2 innings.

Along with Hipchen, Conor Philbin had a strong offensive game as he went 2 for 4 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Damon Saunders racked up three RBIs on four hits for the Vikings. He singled in the third, fifth, and seventh innings as well as homered in the ninth inning. In fact, the Vikings outhit the Lincolns 11-6 and were down 8-2 going into the ninth before scoring three runs and ending the game with the tying run at the plate.

Aaron Hauge (0-1) was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just 4.1 innings, walked five, struck out seven, and allowed four earned runs. The Vikings will look to get back on track when they head to DeKalb on Sunday to take on the Liners.
