Athlete of the Week: Kirchler's Clutch Hit Helps Vikings Right the Ship

Ben Kirchler's RBI single lifted H-F to a dramatic win Saturday that ended a frustrating losing streak.

Homewood-Flossmoor’s baseball team has been trying to recapture the magic the Vikings had earlier in the season.

After rolling to an 11-1 record that included a nine-game winning streak and victories in their first two conference games, the Vikings dropped their next four conference contests.

That’s why Ben Kirchler’s game-winning RBI single against Lockport on Saturday was so significant. The 5-4 victory lifted the Vikings’ record to 12-5 overall and 3-4 in the SouthWest Suburban Blue.

The Vikings looked like they were heading to their fifth straight loss before rallying for two runs to tie the Porters in the seventh, and Kirchler's clutch hit in the eighth lifted them to the road victory.

For his efforts, Kirchler has been named Patch’s Athlete of the Week.

The win was especially important after H-F’s heart-wrenching loss on Friday. The Vikings led Lincoln-Way East 7-6 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Griffins pulled out the win thanks to Chris Scott's two-run home run.
