Baseball: H-F Returns Home, Takes Care of Business

H-F 12, Thornridge 2. After going 3-1 on a trip through Southern Illinois, the Vikings take advantage of numerous miscues to jump all over Thornridge.

Touching All the Bases:  Homewood-Flossmoor took advantage of eight Thornridge errors and rolled to a 12-2 five-inning baseball victory on Thursday. After hitting close to .300 on their spring trip through Southern Illinois and scoring 35 runs in their three wins, the Vikings relied more on the poor defense of the Falcons to score their runs in this rout. The cold conditions made it difficult to get hot at the plate. H-F starting pitcher Evan Nietfeldt was effective in his three innings despite walking three Falcons and giving them a run in the second inning. H-F scored scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second and six in the third. Matt Groboski came in to relieve Nietfeldt and was on the verge of closing out the rout in the top of fifth.  However, with two outs in the fifth and the Vikings up 11-1, the Falcons pushed across their second run.  The Vikings ended the game in the bottom half of the fifth when Dan Lietz hit a flyball to right field that was misplayed by the Falcons ending the game.

Patch’s MVP: Dan Lietz, H-F. The junior center fielder had a team-high three hits on the day.
