Recycle your real Christmas Tree at Irons Oaks

When the stockings are empty and the final ornaments and lights are taken off the family Christmas tree, what will you do with O Tannenbaum?  Turn the tree that brought your family so much joy this Christmas into a gift for the environment by donating it at the 2nd Annual Community Christmas Tree Recycling Program. The program is co-presented by Irons Oaks, the Western Avenue Green Team, and the Molski & Manos families.

You can drop off your tree at the Irons Oaks Vollmer Road parking lot Saturday, January 7 or 14, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The tree will be recycled into mulch and used on the paths and trails of Irons Oaks.  We will accept donations from families in the Chicago Southland and all donors will receive goodie bags in addition to a fact sheet on the benefits of real Christmas trees.

Real Christmas trees are 100% biodegradable, but the decorations are not. Please be sure to remove all decorations from the tree including ornaments, garland and tinsel.

New this year is a Christmas Light recycling program. Old or broken light strings and extension cords will be separated by copper, glass and plastic and recycled.

“We love to see people repurposing their Christmas tree instead of filling landfill,” said Cheryl Vargo, Manager of Irons Oaks. “Irons Oaks is benefiting from the chipped trees and we can’t wait to put them to good use on our paths and trails.”
