Football: H-F's Second-Half Surge Sinks Lincoln-Way Central

Homewood-Flossmoor 42, Lincoln-Way Central 7: Quarterback Timothy Williams throws three touchdown passes and rushes for another as the Vikings glide past the turnover-prone Knights.

Breaking It Down: led by only 14-0 at halftime Friday night, but Taje Smith scored on a 72-yard run less than two minutes into the second half, and H-F was on its way to a 42-7 victory in New Lenox. The Vikings added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 35-0 lead. Lincoln-Way Central finally broke up the shutout with 2:51 remaining in the quarter on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Cale Hayes to Kevin Ward. H-F quarterback Timothy Williams was 15-of-21 passing for 263 yards and three touchdowns, while Smith rushed for 138 yards on 15 carries to lead the winners. Anfernee Roberts intercepted two passes for H-F, as the Knights committed five turnovers.

Patch's MVP: Timothy Williams. On a night where the hosts turned the ball on five occasions, Williams didn't come close to throwing a pick and completed 71 percent of his passes. He had three touchdown passes and also rushed for a touchdown.

Lincoln-Way Central Stat Pack: Quarterback Cale Hayes was 7-of-15 passing for 173 yards and one TD pass, but he threw three interceptions. Kevin Ward had eight catches for 191 yards. Brett Ditchman rushed for 108 yards on 33 carries.

Quotable I: Homewood-Flossmoor coach Craig Buzea on his team's sluggish first half: "We started some new kids today and they made first-game penalties and really pulled back some big plays. We fumbled and hadn't fumbled all year and I think it might've been a by-product of the first two games. We stepped up in competition and things go faster and things like that. The third quarter was entirely different and I was pleased with that."

Quotable II: H-F’s Anfernee Roberts on the team's defensive effort: "Well, we did film study all week—and every week—and coaches come in, and DBs especially were on us this year because last year we didn't do so hot. We were well prepared, we knew the routes they were going to run and knew exactly what they were going to do and (we) did our job."

Quotable III: Lincoln-Way Central coach Brett Hefner on turnovers: "We can't give away possessions. This loss is the same as the other loss. Offensively, we're not sustaining things and our defense is having to play too many plays."

Team Records: H-F improved to 3-0. Lincoln-Way Central fell to 1-2.

What's Next: Lincoln-Way Central travels to Sandburg on Friday night. Homewood-Flossmoor will host Lincoln-Way East on Friday night.
