Football: L-W East Spoils Homewood-Flossmoor's Homecoming

Lincoln-Way East 38, Homewood-Flossmoor 21: Griffins QB Blake Winkler and receiver J.J. Robertson burn the Vikings, who hurt their own cause with five turnovers.

Breaking It Down: In a showdown between two of the Southland's premier high school football teams, Lincoln-Way East had more than enough firepower to hand its first loss of the season on homecoming night at H-F. Griffins quarterback Blake Winkler threw for 356 yards and two touchdowns while going 10-for-14 passing, as L-W East earned a 38-21 victory at H-F and remained unbeaten.

Winkler's two passing scores went to Jason Robertson, for 66 and 67 yards. Robertson finished with 200 yards receiving on four catches.
For the Vikings, costly turnovers in the second half were the story of the night. H-F laid the ball on the ground once, with East recovering it, and the Vikings threw four interceptions in the half that cost the team prime scoring chances. The Vikings trailed just 17-13 at halftime, but as the turnovers mounted, the Griffins pulled away for the SouthWest Suburban Blue victory.

Patch’s MVP: Jason Robertson, Lincoln-Way East. The Illini recruit proved his worth, jetting past the Vikings' secondary twice for TDs of 60+ yards and finished with 200 yards receiving. His quick-strike ability was the difference in this game.

Quotable I: Lincoln-Way East QB Blake Winkler: “We were beating up ourselves. Our greatest opponent is ourselves. We didn't let it phase us that we were only up a few points (at halftime). In the second half we came back strong and executed all the plays that we needed to do and we were able to make those great plays.”

Quotable II: H-F QB Tim Williams: “We started off pretty good. I thought that we executed a lot of stuff, but towards the stretch we made a couple of mental errors and put the ball on the ground and had some turnovers. That really hurt us.”

Team Records: Lincoln-Way East is 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Southwest Suburban Conference Blue play. Homewood-Flossmoor falls to 3-1 and 1-1 in SWSC Blue play.
