Gimme 5: H-F's Mathews Determined to Make Another Big Splash

Viking water polo standout aims to take her team back to the state finals.

Homewood-Flossmoor junior Rebecca Mathews and her teammates are on a mission. After placing fourth in the girls state water polo tournament last season, the Vikings are out to best that mark this year.

So far, they have enjoyed great success. H-F boasts a 20-3 record.

Mathews has played with passion, lighting up the scoreboard nearly every game.

She started swimming when she was 4 years old and has had success her whole life, including going to state with her fellow Vikings during her freshman season and this past fall.

The all-state swimmer started participating in water polo in H-F clubs at the age of 9 and has been on the varsity squad since her freshman year.

“My friends told me about it,” Mathews said.  “It was something to do other than swimming,”

Last week, the Vikings won the St. Ignatius Invitational, beating St. Ignatius, the team they lost to in double-overtime in the state semifinals of state last year. H-F also defeated Lincoln-Way East 10-6 as Mathews led the team with five goals.

She said chemistry is her favorite school subject. She is serious when in the water, but not so intense at all outside of the pool.

She will consider the season a success if the Vikings make it back to the state tournament. And she plans to do whatever it takes to make it happen.
