H-F Boys Basketball Wins Joliet West Summer Shootout

Vikings find a way to get it done vs. Hillcrest in final even without starter Delvon Rencher. He was on a recruiting trip.

The Homewood-Flossmoor boys basketball team took first place in the 32-team Joliet West Summer Shootout. H-F's performance was all the more impressive considering the Vikings were without one of their starters, Delvon Rencher. 

The Vikings defeated state runnerup Warren in the semifinals and Hillcrest in the finals.

Rencher took an unofficial visit to St. Louis University.

"We set three goals this summer," H-F coach Jim McLaughlin said.

"One, be on time, two play hard with an attitute of confidence and desire and, three, to be coachable. There are a lot mistakes in summer basketball we need to own up to it, and it seems to be working."

Lewers Earns Another Girls Soccer Honor

H-F girls' soccer standout Kelly Lewers won the Southtown Star's player of the year award. It is the second time in the last three years that Lewers has won the award.

She scored 47 goals and had 24 assists in 24 games, helping the Vikings win a sectional title.

Lewers finished her career at H-F with 127 goals, 65 assists was a three-time all-state selection, a four-time all-Southwest Suburban Blue pick and an All-Midwest Region pick this year.

In addition to Lewers, Ali Farkos and Emily Johnson also were named to the Southtown Star's All-Area Team.

Farkos had nine goals and 24 assists and was an IHSSCA All-State selection and All-Southwest Suburban Blue pick

Johnson was a force on defense. She also recorded a goal and 10 assists. She was an IHSSCA All-Sectional pick and an All-Southwest Suburban Blue pick. Next, she will head to Illinois Wesleyan.

H-F's Armstrong, Mayer Make the Grade

Two recent H-F grads were named to the Chicago Tribune's Scholar-Athete team.

Ashley Armstrong and Michelle Mayer were standouts both in the classroom andon the field for the Vikings. 

Armstrong ranked fourth out of 678 students in her graduating class. She is heading to Notre Dame to play golf. She finished in the top five of the Class AA state golf tournament all four years, including third-place finishes in 2007 and 2010.

Armstrong helped the Vikings win the championship in 2009 and was presented with the American Junior Golf Association's Jerry Cole Sportsmanship Award in 2010. She was named to the HP Scholastic Junior All-America Team in 2009 and 2010.

In the classroom, she was an AP Scholar with Honors and an Illinois State Scholar. She was named to the National Honor Society and earned straight A's through junior high and high school.

Mayer, ranked No. 9 out of 678 and headed to the University of Illinois, was a four-year starter and three-year all-state selection in water polo. He helped the Vikings reach the IHSA quarterfinals in 2011 and notch a fourth-place finish in 2010. She is the H-F career assists and steals leader and ranks second in career scoring with 293 goals.

Mayer also was a four-year state qualifier in golf, finishing 10th in 2010 and fourth in 2009, when the Vikings won the Class AA championship.

In the classroom, she was named to the National Honor Society. She also was an Illinois State Scholar and AP Scholar with Honors and a member of the H-F state champion journalism team.
