H-F Boys, Girls Polo Teams Have Plans on Making a Splash

Vikings' Chris Workman emerges winner of epic pole vault dual at Southwest Suburban Blue indoor track and field meet.

Despite losing their leading scorer from last year in Russell Maanum, the Homewood-Flossmoor boys’ water polo team put on an impressive showing in the Palatine Tournament.

The Vikings went 2-1-1 in a tournament that featured some of the top teams in the state, including wins over New Trier and Chicago Latin. H-F also tied highly rated Chicago Curie.

* Facing a talented field of competitors in the H-F Invite, Viking gymnast Antoine Dantzler led H-F with a second-place finish on vault (9.20) and a fourth-place finish in the floor exercise (9.10)

* After finishing fourth in state last season, the H-F girls’ water polo team has high expectations for this season, too.  With four returning starters in Rebecca Matthews, Michelle Mayer, Sophie Schloen and Hannah Ongman, the Vikings are looking to match or improve on last year's finish.

* H-F senior pole vaulter Chris Worman won a classic battle over Lockport’s Alex Fisch in last week’s Southwest Suburban Blue indoor boys track and field meet in Lockport.  Lockport Invite: The two went back-and-forth for about an hour, joining the battle at 11 feet and also clearing 12 feet, then 12-6, 13 feet, then 13-6.

Worman prevailed on the strength of one more Fisch miss after both missed three attempts at 14-1. That pushed H-F ahead of Bolingbrook for third place in a meet won by Lockport. Joliet West finished second.

* Despite dropping a sectional semifinal game to Crete-Monee, the H-F boys’ basketball team won its eighth consecutive regional title, the highlight of that run was a runner-up finish in the Class AA state tourney in 2004.
