H-F Girls Learning Lessons the Hard Way

Despite badminton losses, Vikings understand the value in facing top-notch competition.

Homewood-Flossmoor's badminton team finished fourth out of 10 teams in the highly competitive Lincoln-Way Central Invite.

Claire Hamilton finished second in No. 2 singles play, while Tara Nye nabbed a top-four (no third-place match) finish in No.1 singles. Then, on Tuesday, the Vikings won at Lincoln-Way North 10-5 as Hamilton won No. 2 singles and she teamed with Jennifer Parker to win No. 4 doubles.

On Thursday, the Vikings fell to Lockport 13-2, but Nye won the No. 1 singles match. “We have had a slow start to the season,” H-F coach Tracy Badger said. “We have played a lot of competitive teams. But, despite losing, we are playing well.”

And Badger has big goals for the Vikings. She hopes to get two singles players and two doubles teams downstate.

Ehimwenman Shines

H-F girls track standout Abieyawa Ehimwenman was co-athlete of the meet in the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic at Illinois Wesleyan. The Ohio State recruit was first in the long jump, anchored the Vikings' winning 800-meter relay team, took second in the triple jump and was fifth in the 200.

Peterson, Banton Lift Vikings

The H-F boys’ water polo team defeated Lincoln-Way West 20-4 and Lincoln-Way North 12-1. Against West, Caleb Peterson had five goals, while against North Shay Banton had six goals and Peterson five. The Vikings improved to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the Southwest Suburban Conference.

M&M Treats

The H-F girls’ water polo team also defeated Lincoln-Way West 20-1 and Lincoln-Way North 15-0. Against North, Rebecca Mathews and Michelle Mayer each scored five goals as the Vikings improved to 8-1 overall, 3-0 in the Southwest Suburban Conference.

Successful Trip

The H-F baseball team went 3-1 on its season-opening trip through Southern Illinois. The Vikings beat Carbondale (16-7), Carterville (6-2) and Salem (13-3).  Their only loss was a 2-0 setback to Waterloo. In that game, the teams were knotted in a scoreless draw until Waterloo scored two runs, one unearned, in the bottom of the sixth inning.

H-F hit .290 on the trip, had a staff ERA of 2.96 and had a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4-to-1.
