H-F Girls Soccer Reached Plenty of Goals

Despite the season-ending, double-overtime loss to Granite City, the Vikings made a lasting impression.

After Homewood-Flossmoor’s girls soccer team upset Sandburg in the Class 3A sectional finals, the Vikings seemed poised to take home some hardware at this weekend's state final four. 

But first the Vikings had to travel two hours south to Normal for Tuesday night’s supersectional meeting with Granite City (located just outside of St. Louis). The Vikings played poorly but still had chances to pull out the win, but they eventually fell 3-2 in double overtime.

Despite the loss the Vikings, had a great season, finishing with a 21-3 record and led by senior Kelly Lewers with 47 goals.

Mixed Emotions for Vikings Softball

H-F’s softball team shocked favored Stagg 4-1 in the H-F regional final last Saturday afternoon, as Kaitlyn Shreyk had two home runs to spark the offense and Sarah Burke kept the Chargers’ bats quiet.

But , as the Thunderbolts rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Still, Vikings had a good season under rookie head coach Katie Rice-Hoger, finishing the season with a 19-15 record and the memorable regional final victory.

Rough Inning Costly for H-F Baseball

H-F’s baseball team saw its season end thanks to Brother Rice and the Vikings’ own defensive miscues. Five unearned runs in the first inning was all the Crusaders needed in their 5-0 regional semifinal win. The Vikings finished the season with a record of 19-12.

Vikings Boys Tennis Takes 27th in State

The H-F boys tennis team finished tied for 27th in last week’s state competition. Brad Holt won his first two singles matches before losing to area power Tim Kopinski of Stagg. After a win in his first consolation match, Holt dropped his second and was eliminated.

The doubles team of Jack Schumann and Kodie Hayes won its first match before dropping its last two.

Dorsey Takes 4th in State

At last week's state boys' track meet, H-F’s Ephraim Dorsey took fourth in the 800-meter run.

Water Polo Honors

H-F’s girls water polo players Rebecca Mathews and Michelle Mayer were recently named to the all-state tournament team. The Vikings advanced to the state quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Fenwick.
