H-F Girls Track Team Dominates Conference Meet

Abieya Ehimwenman continues to stand out for Vikings. Meanwhile, the H-F girls water polo team is ready for the postseason after a 25-3 regular season.

Homewood-Flossmoor’s girls track and field team took first place at the Southwest Suburban Blue meet held at H-F on Thursday night. Two occurrences came as no surprise to anyone: The weather was miserable—cold and rainy—and the Vikings’ Abieya Ehimwenman was untouchable in the long jump and triple jump, as she has been all season long.

Ehimwenman easily took first in those two events, but she showed that she may be human as she lost two close races—the 100- and 200-meter relays—to fellow area phenom Aaliyah Brown of Lincoln-Way East.

Other top performers on the night for the Vikings included Courtney Salley and Taylor Lynch, (first and second, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles); Leslie Esco (third, just behind Ehimwenman, in the 100-meter dash); Emani Roberts (second in the 300-meter hurdles); Christina Patterson (second in the high jump); LaChrissa Safforld (first in the discus, third in shot put); and Amanda Morgan (second in shot put).

The Vikings’ 4 x 100, 4 x 200 and 4 x 800 relay teams all had second-place finishes.

H-F’s total of 152 points was well ahead of second-place Bolingbrook (117) and third-place Lincoln-Way Central (85).

The Vikings will host sectionals on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m. It figures to be the toughest sectional in the state, with many winners projected to be favorites at the state meet.

H-F Water Polo Team Storms into Sectional Play

Homewood-Flossmoor’s girls water polo team will be the top seed at next week’s Lincoln-Way North Sectional after finishing the regular season with a 25-3 record.

The Vikings beat Sandburg in their last home game of the season, marking the end of the home careers of three players who left their mark on the program—Michelle Mayer, Hannah Ongman and Sophie Schleon.

Check out the accompanying videos, which includes the senior ceremony after the victory over Sandburg, coach Pat Duignan commenting on what the seniors meant to the program, coach Duignan's thoughts on next week’s sectional and Sophie Schleon reflecting on playing her last match at H-F. In the photo section, you can find a photo of the seniors with coach Duignan.

Boys Tennis Team Gears Up for Conference Meet

The Vikings’ boys' tennis team suffered a tough loss to Lincoln-Way East on Wednesday at home. It all came down to the doubles match between the Griffins’ Adam Corazzi and Jake Stoiber and the Vikings’ Matt Yonover and Adam Greisbach, and the Griffins’ duo pulled out the match in thrilling fashion. Check out the accompanying video of the final moments of the deciding doubles match.

Despite the loss, Vikings coach Michael Sacks has his team is focused on the upcoming conference meet.

"When we have the conference meet, that is what it is going to come down to … we will back hungry next week,” he said.

Conference action will take place at H-F next Friday and Saturday.

Girls Soccer Team No. 2 Seed

H-F’s girls soccer team won twice in Burlington, Iowa, but also lost its first match of the season, by a 3-2 score. The Vikings bounced back this past Tuesday with a 7-2 rout of Bolingbrook.

On Thursday, the Vikings traveled to Orland Park to take on Sandburg with the conference title on the line. Both teams came in undefeated in conference, but it was the Eagles who prevailed with a 2-0 victory.

The Vikings are 15-2 on the season and will be the No. 2 seed in the Mother McAuley Sectional. They will open regional play at home on May 18 against the winner of Hyde Park vs. Eisenhower.
