H-F Track and Field Teams Show Championship Form

The Viking girls team, led by Abieya Ehimwenman, wins sectional crown, while the boys squad wins conference meet.

The highly anticipated Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional girls track and field meet got under way Thursday, but some events were pushed back to Friday because of thunderstorms.

Through Thursday, H-F's LaChrissa Safforld had qualified in the discus and Abieya Ehimwenman had qualified in the long jump (1st place, 18 feet, 8.75 inches).

After the completion of Friday's events, H-F won the sectional with a total of 95.3 points, edging Lincoln-Way East (85). Lincoln-Way Central (53) was third.

In addition to winning the long jump on Thursday, Ehimwenman on Friday won the triple jump with a personal-best effort of 38 feet, 11.5 inches. She also helped the Vikings win the 800 relay, and she finished second in the 200.

Qualifiers will compete at next weekend’s state meet at Eastern Illinois University.

Boys Track Squad Wins Conference Meet

H-F’s boys track and field team is the SouthWest Suburban Blue Conference champion after compiling 130.5 points to top second-place Lockport’s 124 on Thursday night in Lockport.

H-F won two relays as Dave McDermott, Cahron Cross, Kendall Keller and Ephraim Dorsey took first in the 3,200 and Matt Dieundonne, Vonzell Mansfield, Jeremy Baker and Dorsey won the 1,600.

Other winners included Cedric Cheeks in the long jump, Kevin Pettit in the triple jump, Josh Nance in the 400-meter dash and Dorsey in the 800 meters.  Cheeks took second to Pettit in the triple jump.

Now it’s on to sectionals, where the Vikings will be competing at Bloom Township in Chicago Heights on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Water Polo Teams Aiming High

So far so good for H-F’s boys and girls water polo teams in their quest to make it back to the state quarterfinals.

The boys beat Lincoln-Way North 21-11 in Lincoln-Way North Sectional quarterfinal action. Caleb Peterson had seven goals, Luke Dobben had four goals and four assists and Jake Bodnar made 14 saves for H-F.

On Friday, the squad won its sectional semifinal showdown with Lincoln-Way East by a convincing 11-4 score, improving its record to 23-6-2. A win in today’s sectional title game would send the Vikings to Stevenson High School for a quarterfinal game Friday night beginning at 8:15 p.m.

As for the girls, they beat Lincoln-Way West 18-4 in quarterfinal action at the Lincoln-Way North Sectional. Rebecca Mathews had six goals, Hannah Ongman scored three, Michelle Mayer had two goals and five assists and Sophie Schloen made 14 saves for the Vikings.

On Friday, the team beat Andrew 11-1 in the sectional semifinals. H-F’s girls team (27-3) plays the Bremen co-op squad for the sectional title today. A victory would send the Vikings to Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire for state quarterfinal action on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Galen Competes at State Badminton

H-F sophomore Cory Galen is competing at the state meet this weekend at Eastern Illinois University. Galen defeated Stevenson’s Wan Wan Liu, 21-18, 21-18 in Friday’s first round of the championship bracket, then fell to Oswego’s Breanne Vergonet in the second round by scores of 21-18, 7-21, 12-21.

Boys Lacrosse Team on a Roll

H-F’s boys lacrosse team beat Champaign Centennial, Lane Tech and Minooka in the past week. Against Lane Tech, defenseman Brandon Metoyer had 11 groundballs and goalie John Parish had eight saves. Ryan Walker led the offense with five goals and two assists, while Justin Johnson had three goals and two assists. The Vikings improved to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in conference.

Girls Soccer Team Rolls into Playoffs

H-F’s girls soccer team wrapped up its regular season in style.

The Vikings beat  Marian Catholic 4-1 Tuesday on Senior Night, as Kelly Lewers scored all four goals for the Vikings. Then on Wednesday, the Vikings beat Lockport and former H-F coach Todd Elkei by a 3-0 score. Lewers, Haley Hruska and Sara Shiver scored the goals for the Vikings.

Lewers’ goal was her 40th of the season as the Vikings improved to 17-2 overall and 5-1 in conference. H-F will host its own regional next week. The Vikings will take on the winner of Hyde Park vs. Eisenhower on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Ups and Downs for H-F Baseball

It’s been a roller-coaster ride for H-F’s baseball team in the last week.

The Vikings beat local rivals Rich Central and Marian Catholic, but lost to conference rivals Bolingbrook and Sandburg.

Last Saturday, the Vikings took advantage of eight errors by Rich Central to win 12-6, as Ryan Rasmas went 2-for-5 and Ben Kirchler reached base five times.

Despite a home run by Kirchler, the Vikings lost 7-4 to Bolingbrook on Monday. They bounced back on Tuesday to trounce Marian Catholic 12-2 in five innings. Kirchler again sparked the offense against the Spartans, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Sean Dwyer went 2-for-3 with two homers and three RBIs.

On Wednesday the Vikings fell to Sandburg 17-5, dropping their record to 15-9 overall and 4-8 in conference.

Next week H-F will play a two-game series with Lincoln-Way Central—in New Lenox on Tuesday and at home on Thursday. On Friday the Vikings will welcome state home run king Tim Barry and Oak Forest to town.

Rough Week for H-F Softball

H-F’s softball team played some of the best teams in the state in the last week. The Vikings lost 2-0 to Lemont, fell 4-0 to Lockport, lost 18-4 to Beecher and were edged 3-2 by Lincoln-Way East. That put the Vikings’ record at 15-11 overall and 6-4 in conference.

Conference Meet Next for Boys Tennis Team

H-F’s boys tennis team closed out the regular season with a fourth-place finish at the Normal U-High Invite. Brad Holt took second in No. 1 singles and teamed up with Jack Schumann for third in No. 1 doubles. This weekend the Vikings are hosting the SouthWest Suburban Conference meet. Next week H-F will be hosting sectionals.
