Tennisfest, Bastille Day Bike Ride and Teen Baking Contest: 5 Things to Know This Week

Summer Music at , presented by the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO), is part of an intimate concert series and the perfect way to sit back, relax, and experience the collaboration and artistry of talented IPO musicians.

This week, travel through time as the IPO Brass Quintet embarks on a musical journey: from the brass classics of the Baroque and Romantic eras, jazz standards of Duke Ellington and Fats Waller, and even sounds from Motown and the Temptations! The outdoor courtyard performance is $25/ ticket.

The H-F Park District's celebration of the lifetime sport of tennis kicks off on Wednesday at the . This year the event includes free lessons and clinics, 53-event tournament, a  and the July 16 World Team Tennis One Night Stand.

The event's famous  will also occur on Saturday at 5 p.m. and is open to everyone - tennis player or not! If your pet reminds you of a famous athlete or celebrity or, just looks like you, bring it to with a picture of the athlete, celebrity or yourself. All pets must be on a leash and must have current vaccinations. Registration for this portion of the event must be received by July 15 at 5 p.m.

Watermelon Eating Contest (Fri, July 15)

Come out to cheer on your children and friends at the annual Watermelon Eating Contest at . Onsite registration begins at 2 p.m. with the first age group beginning at approximately 2:20 p.m. Participants are divided by age group and compete to see who can eat the most watermelon!

Prizes are awarded to the top three participants in each age category following their event. All ages are welcome. Simply bring your appetite and be prepared to get sticky at this fun event!

The Homewood-Flossmoor Bike Fun Strike Force is sponsoring a bicycle tour of the area's beautiful neighborhoods while stopping periodically for cake breaks. It will be an easy eight-mile ride and all ages are welcome, although any children paticipating must be able to ride in the street.

The tour will befin and end at the , located in the , on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.

This Saturday at 1 p.m., anyone in grades 7 through 12 is welcome to come out and participate in .

Contestants will use their imagination to create a dessert using the ingredients provided by the library. Judges will pick the best-tasting dessert and prizes will be awarded. Registration is required for the event. Contact the for more information.
