Dog Days and Piano Play-off This Saturday in Downtown Homewood

Bring your family and your pooches to this annual Homewood event, and make sure to catch Patch's special Piano Play-off event!

New York has the Macy’s Day Parade, Beverly has the South Side Irish Parade. In Homewood, we have the Pooch Parade.

The village's annual Dog Days of Summer is back this Saturday at Martin Avenue and Ridge Road in downtown Homewood. The giant block party kicks off at 10 a.m. and lasts until 7 p.m. Entertainment and activities are scheduled throughout the event, including Patch’s Pop-Up Piano Play-off, face painting, carnival games, live music and the aforementioned Pooch Parade (H-F Patch Ad Manager Mary Olson is on the panel of judges).

Dog Days of Summer is meant to highlight the “close-knit way of life” in our community, according to a press release from the Village of Homewood's Community Relations Commission.

"There's a difference between being a resident and being a neighbor. When you know (and like) who you live next to, you are more connected and committed to your community,” Homewood Public Relations Manager Rachael Jones said in the press release. "Neighborhoods are safer and the quality of life is richer by simply knowing the name (and a little bit more)  about the person you live next to."

For all those bringing your dogs, make sure to pose for a photo by Patch for our gallery. We’re also going to offer some dog-centric prizes in a random drawing among all those who get their photo taken with their pet.

Patch’s Pop-Up Piano Play-off

In honor of Homewood’s Pop-Up Piano public art exhibit, we’re inviting everyone who knows their way around the ivories to stop by and show us your chops. From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. we’ll be in-between and along with the pianos. Anyone interesting in entering the contest will get three minutes to wow us. Longtime instructor Ellen Manes will also be there offering commentary on the performances. Later, we’ll post a video gallery of all the performances and readers can vote on their favorites. Prizes will be reserved for the top-rated performers.
