Steak lovers can rest assured; a well-known rib and chop-house in Glenwood did not burn down Friday night. A few onlookers set up chairs and watched Friday night as Glenwood firefighters conducted a controlled burn that leveled a building on North Main Street. Some Patch readers were concerned that Glenwood Oaks, which is located close the site of the burn, was the source of the fire and had possibly burned down. Restaurant General manager Mark Lerose assured Patch the much-loved restaurant was still standing. The controlled burn, which was started by the Glenwood Fire Department, began at about 9 p.m. "Customers and neighbors had lawn chairs, watching, Lerose said. Megachurch Sex Lawsuit Filed in Will County: Court Supervision

A lawsuit against an imprisoned preacher from Crete and an Indiana megachurch topped the week's court news.

A former megachurch preacher sentenced to 12 years in federal prison in March for carrying on a sexual relationship with a teenage member of his congregation was sued in Will County court. In addition to preacher Jack Schaap, 55, of Crete, the First Baptist Church of Hammond was named as a defendant in the lawsuit. Medical Marijuana Bill Passed by Illinois Senate; Quinn Last Hurdle

Passed by a 35-21 vote, the bill now goes to the desk of Gov. Pat Quinn, who has not yet said whether he intends to sign it.

By a vote of 35-21, the Illinois Senate approved legislation on Friday that would allow doctors in the state to prescribe marijuana as pain relief for severe medical conditions. The bill now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature. According to the Chicago Tribune, the bill covers 33 specific conditions—including multiple sclerosis, cancer and HIV infection—and includes several controls, with a four-year trial program, dosage limits, fingerprinting, background checks and licensed dispensing centers. “This bill is filled with walls to keep this limited,” the paper quoted sponsoring Sen. Bill Haine (D-Alton), who urged lawmakers to pass the legislation as a compassionate measure for those suffering with extreme pain. In opposition, Sen. …

Stan, your comment about liquor is really silly. Anyone who has been around a drunk knows that they don't sober up in 8 hours. When they go to work, they are useless. Their brains atrophy. Their livers deteriorate, along with their pancreases. And they smell bad - really bad.   more ›

WTF, Illinois? We Curse Like Sailors

Marchex Institute says Illinois residents are among the worst offenders in the country when it comes to swear words, though we are pretty courteous with 'please' and 'thank you.'

Well gosh darn it, turns out we're a bunch of potty mouths here in Illinois, thank you very much. That's the finding from the Marchex Institute, a data analysis firm, which ranks Illinois as the 5th worst cursing state in the country, though acknowledges that we're pretty liberal with our "pleases" and "thank yous."  Just in time for National Etiquette Week, Marchex released findings on the most courteous and the least courteous states in the nation. The Institute examined more than 600,000 phone calls from the past 12 months. You know, the calls that "may be recorded for training purposes." The calls were placed by consumers to businesses across 30 industries, including cable and satellite companies, auto dealerships, pest control centers…

Police: Flossmoor Woman's Report of $100K Jewelry Robbery 'Unfounded'

A Flossmoor woman told Chicago Police that several men robbed her of $100,000 worth of jewelry on Wednesday, May 15 in the 700 block of Michigan Avenue. While investigating the report, police discovered that the robbery was fabricated.

Chicago police are saying a 68-year-old Flossmoor woman lied about a group of men robbing her of $100,000 in jewelry Wednesay on Chicago's Magnificent Mile, WGN News reports. The woman, who asked not to be identified, told police that eight suspects accosted her and told her, "Take off the jewelry, or we'll take it off for you." She told police she didn't scream for help during the robbery because she was afraid the men might harm her, according to reports. Police checked all the surveillance footage from the area, but were unable to find any evidence of the robbery on the footage. “Chicago Police have determined that the reported Michigan Ave robbery of a 68-year-old woman Wednesday is unfounded," according to a statement from police. "…

Authorities have not said much about the shooting death of Brandon Culpepper inside an Olive Road apartment building on Jan. 27.

Little information has surfaced since the officer-involved shooting of a Homewood man inside an apartment building nearly four months ago. An attorney at the law firm representing Brandon Culpepper’s family in a lawsuit against the Homewood Police Department told Patch they haven't heard much from authorities and investigators since making a request for more information about the shooting death. “My client is dead and the department hasn’t said too much regarding what has occurred,” said Gregory Kulis of the Chicago-based firm Gregory E. Kulis & Associates. Culpepper confronted police on the third floor of an Olive Road apartment building in the early morning of Jan. 27, according to reports. Officers had been called to the building for a …
