Homewood Permits Video Gambling

The controversial ordinance amendment passed unanimously during the Aug. 14 Homewood Village Board meeting.

Ready or not, here it comes. The ordinance prohibiting state approved video gaming within the Village of Homewood was unanimously amended Tuesday night. Now, establishments with an on-premise consumption liquor license will be allowed to install video gambling machines. All machines are regulated to accept nothing higher than a $2 bet and to pay out no more than $500. Rather than dispensing money, the machines print out vouchers that can only be redeemed by special ATM-like machines. Not all in attendance were supportive of the change, though. Lucy Kokal spoke on behalf of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in opposition of the ordinance amendment. Underage gambling and gambling addiction were Kokal’s chief concerns. This is the showdown we've all been waiting for.

There are a select few foods that people in the South Suburbs will argue about. Pizza is one of those foods. This week's Chowdown takes a look at the most popular pizza places in the Chicago Heights and H-F area, pitting the tastes head-to-head and allowing you to decide who comes out on top. Whose sauce makes you salivate? Who uses just the right amount of cheese? Whose pepperoni has the kick you enjoy? And don't even get started on crust. The options are: This is going to be fun. 5th Quarter Wins Chili Chowdown Showdown

5th Quarter owner Steve Nemitz shares his reaction after winning best chili by a 60 percent popular vote.

The people have spoken. 5th Quarter in Homewood was voted winner of our most recent, and first-ever democratic Chowdown Showdown: battle chili. The runner-up was The Tender Trap in Chicago Heights followed by Lassen's in Homewood. Watch the video to see 5th Quarter owner Steve Nemitz' response to the good news.
