A Marine from Homewood and his grandfather, a World War II veteran in Chicago Heights, stepped onto the ice at a Blackhawks game in December.
In front of more than 22,000 hockey fans, Marines from the Heights and Homewood capped off 2010 with world champions. Chicago Heights resident John Longo, 83, and his grandson David High, 21, of Homewood, were honored on the ice at a Blackhawks game Dec. 30 against the San Jose Sharks. Nearly two weeks later, both Marines are still beaming about the experience. “It was a great honor for me and my grandson,” Longo said. “It was really heartwarming.” High said he was excited just to be standing next to someone he respects so much. “My grandfather’s a World War II vet,” High said. “So, it was a really good time being out there with him.” Since the night of the game, both Longo and High said they have been recognized by people who saw the game…
Dec. 4 marked the H-F Ice Arena's hosting of a charity game between Chicago Blackhawk Alumni and local team the South Side Selects.
More than 800 people showed up at the H-F Ice Arena on Dec. 4 to watch former Chicago Blackhawk players in a game of hockey against local team the South Side Selects. The Blackhawk Alumni Classic games are part of an ongoing program to benefit the American Hockey Association of Illinois' "Hockey is for Everyone" program. The charity helps introduce hockey to children and provides them with the resources to play the game. Included in the Alumni team were former Blackhawks Grant Mulvey, Cliff Koroll, Reid Simpson, Dave Mackey, Steve Poapst, Brian Noonan and Reg Kerr.
