2nd District congressional candidate Debbie Halvorson is returning fire on New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg after his super PAC ran an attack ad criticizing her previous support from the NRA.
2nd District candidate Debbie Halvorson is accusing New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg of trying to “buy an election in Illinois,” after his political action committee ran a television ad attacking Halvorson for her previous A rating from the NRA, the Chicago Tribune reports. Unlike most of her 2nd District race counterparts, Halvorson does not support Obama’s gun ban. Bloomberg’s new Independence USA super PAC is known for supporting the election or defeat of legislators depending on their likelihood to help fuel an aggressive anti-gun agenda, according to the National Journal. The former NFL player and current State Senator Napoleon Harris says Kelly supports the issues he sees as pressing to the 2nd District.
State Senator Napoleon Harris is dropping out of the race to fill Jesse Jackson Jr.’s former 2nd District congressional seat. His Wednesday afternoon announcement also came with a surprise endorsement of candidate Robin Kelly (D). “I believe we need to fight for more educational opportunity, better jobs and to get guns out of the hands of criminals and gangs that are preying on our neighborhoods,” Harris said in a release. “I believe Robin Kelly is the right candidate to pick up that cause to fight for the people of Chicago and the Southland." After losing to former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., former Illinois Rep. Debbie Halvorson has announced her intention to run for the set he has vacated, in a special election planned for the spring.
Former Illinois State Rep. Debbie Halvorson announced her candidacy to replace former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s newly vacant seat, according to the Chicago Tribune. This news comes only months after Halvorson lost to incumbent Jackson for the position in the March 2012 Democratic primary. Halvorson is known for being the first female Illinois state senate majority leader. She also formerly served as an 11th District Representative in state congress. Former Rep. Jackson recently resigned from his position as 2nd District Representative Nov. 21, after winning re-election just a couple weeks prior. The recently re-elected Congressman is reportedly leaving the Mayo Clinic after several weeks, but a spokesperson from the clinic says he doesn’t know where Jackson is.
Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has departed from the Mayo clinic, according to the Chicago Tribune. A spokesperson from the clinic reported the information earlier today, but said he’s not sure where Jackson went, reports say. The newly re-elected Congressman has been at Mayo since October. He previously spent several weeks during the summer there, during which he was diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder. All throughout, Jackson has eluded nearly all media outlets. In addition to his illness, Jackson faces a federal investigation for allegedly misusing his campaign funds and is reportedly in plea deal talks that could involve jail time. Republicans, Democrats and independents joined Patch editors Wednesday night at presidential debate viewing parties throughout the Chicago area. WGN Ch. 9 stopped by one party in Flossmoor at the Flossmoor Station to take the pulse of voters. Patch hosted parties at St. Xavier University in Mount Greenwood, Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Cemeno's Restaurant in Joliet, the Kendall Grille in Yorkville and the Lemont Community Center in Lemont.
