Flossmoor: Ice Cream Capital of the Southland

Indulge. It's National Ice Cream Month! See how much of the sweet treat your neighbors buy.

Ice cream is a summer favorite that many people enjoy, but who likes the sweet treat the most?  In the south suburbs, no town buys more ice cream than Flossmoor, according to a recent report by Crain's Chicago Business. Finding France in Flossmoor: Editor's Choice

This week's obsession: the newer pastry offerings at Sweet Annie's Bakery in Flossmoor.

I used to date a girl who worked at an esteemed European bakery in Chicago. Every night she'd bring back astoundingly delicious pastries and other baked goods. I've had the real thing in Europe, and those Chicago treats stood their ground strong. A week ago, I stopped into Sweet Annie's Bakery in Flossmoor after a haircut next door and was astonished to see what happened to her usual display case. The cookies and other sweets before were fantastic, but there seemed to be some invaders this time. Invaders—from France. Delicate macaroons, opera tortes with real gold leaf accents and some mysterious but picturesque-looking chocolate mini pies were featured alongside the usual baked goods. Local Bakery Sweet Annie's Debuts Paczkis for Fat Tuesday

Sweet Annie's Bakery in Flossmoor offered paczkis for the first time ever this Fat Tuesday.

For the first time since opening two and a half years ago, Sweet Annie’s Bakery in Flossmoor offered paczkis on its menu in honor of Fat Tuesday. Owner Anne Aboushousha said the coveted treat did not last long. “We had 200 made, and by noon, we ran out,” Aboushousha said. “Someone ate one … came back, and got six more!” Aboushousha said Sweet Annie's typically doesn’t offer items like donuts or paczkis because the bakery does not have the necessary ventilation for such an undertaking. However, not wanting to disappoint hungry patrons craving the Polish treat, Sweet Annie’s imported paczki shells from Pearson’s Bakery and added their own fillings, including whipped cream, strawberry and chocolate butter cream.
