Give back to local teachers by celebrating World Teachers' Day on Oct. 5.
World Teachers' Day, celebrated on Oct. 5, is a great opportunity to show teachers in Districts 161, 153 and 233 how great you think they are. But, the day also takes on a deeper meaning, standing for the protection of teachers' rights. Since its inception in 1994, World Teachers' Day has had a theme every year. The theme for 2012 is “Take a stand for teachers.” This day was founded by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Its aim is to educate the public about the conditions of being a teacher around the world, focusing specifically on the protection of teachers' rights, and the proper training, development and status raising of teachers. Find out how to vote for local schools to win a donation from U.S. Cellular, which is giving away a total of $1 million.
U.S. Cellular is excited to announce the return of its Calling All Communities campaign. For the fourth year, U.S. Cellular is giving $1 million to schools to improve the education of students. The campaign invites communities to band together to vote for their school by visiting their local U.S. Cellular store to pick up a voting code and entering it online at uscellular.com. Voting begins this Friday, Sept. 14, and runs through Oct. 21. The school that garners the most community votes will win $150,000 and the next 17 schools with the most votes will receive $50,000. Our Facebook "likes" continue to climb at breakneck speed. We've already jumped up 38 more since last week. At a time when we were just recently averaging 50 "likes" a month, this is incredible. We have you to thank, entirely. Earlier in the week I had a disappointing fast food experience at a local fast food chain. Wondering if I was the only one who seems like he’s dealing with this all the time, I went to our Facebook page for an informal survey in hopes to get some other opinions on the local fast food scene. Our hearts go with Mrs.Joan Mahler of Dist.161. She taught at Western Av. for many years before being transfered to Heather Hill. Mrs.Mahler has the unique gift of 'gentle authority'. She teaches her subjects with finesse and quietly instills diplomacy, self acceptance, self worth, self preservation, respect, love and acceptance in her students.
