The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.
By David Mills One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. In 2011, 323 people were killed by alcohol-related crashed in Illinois, which makes up 35 percent of the 918 total crash …

SUNDAY, MARCH 31 Jerome Martin, 24, of North Cottage Grove Avenue in Glenwood (full address not given), was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without insurance, according to a report. Martin was found at about 4:45 p.m. near the 3000 block of 183rd Street while police were investigating a 2006 white Chevrolet Monte Carlo that had extensive damage. He reportedly had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Martin told police he was walking home to Glenwood after drinking in Chicago. He also admitted to driving drunk and striking a tree but couldn't remember where the crash happened. He is due on Markham court on May 8. Homewood police reports, March 26–28.
THURSDAY, MARCH 28 Lucien Coffey, 34, of the 800 block of Elder in Homewood, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance and driving without a rear license plate light, according to a report. Coffey was stopped at about 12:35 a.m. near 1243 Hillview Road. Police said they arrested Coffey for safety reasons after he immediately got of his car when stopped. An officer reported smelling marijuana. When asked about drugs by police, Coffey told police he had a "joint" in his pants. He is due in Markham court on April 16. MONDAY, MARCH 11 A rifle magazine containing .223-caliber ammo was found in the 18900 block of Harding Avenue. The woman who reported the ammo told police she discovered it lying in her yard. SUNDAY, MARCH 17 Two 9mm bullet casings were found on the ground near a soccer net at Flossmoor Hills Elementary School, according to a report. A man walking his dog at about 11 a.m found the casings. Police had received a report of shots fired on March 15 in the area of 707 Elm St., which is located across the street from the school. Each tank is worth $75, for a total of $300. No arrest was reported from this incident. THURSDAY, FEB. 28 Jelena Odak, 37, of the 10000 block of South Homan Avenue, Evergreen Park, was charged with DUI and improper lane use, according to a Flossmoor police report. Police allegedly spotted Odak's black Ford SUV crossing the center line and weaving in the lanes, striking the curb at least twice. She was stopped at about 9 a.m. on Vollmer Road. According to police, Odak reportedly had an odor of alcohol on her breath and slurred her speech. She told police she was unable to perform field sobriety tests. MOKENA Feb. 8: Taiwo Erinle, 32, of New Lenox, was found passed out at the wheel of his car with the engine running. The car was found at 3:45 a.m. Feb. 8 in the middle of two lanes of traffic on 191st St. at Wolf Road. According to the report, police said Taiwo Erinle's foot was on the brake, but the car was in the drive position. He was passed out at the wheel with the windows rolled up and rap music blaring. The officer drove the squad about six inches in front of Erinle's car. He placed a push bar between the two bumpers to prevent Erinle's car from moving into traffic unexpectedly.
