Along Dixie Highway, there are numerous businesses in the Homewood-Flossmoor area, but there are also many spaces along the roadway that sit vacant. One such location is the former Bios Life at 18129 Dixie Highway. The location, which features a glass storefront and a shared entrance with a salon, has street parking, counter space and floor space for retail displays or desks for an office setting. The 10th Annual Railroad Heritage Day celebration is this Sunday, May 19, at the Homewood Auditorium. The free event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The village of Homewood has a rich railway history and to celebrate, the village is hosting its 10th Annual Railroad Heritage Day on Sunday, May 19. The event will take place at the Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road, and will feature interactive displays, a chance for attendees to listen in on actual railroad switching conversations and more. The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is free to attend and open to all ages. The event will also feature Little Obie, a scale model of a Canadian National locomotive, that children will be able to ride. The Cherry Creek Plaza is home to several businesses that serve the Homewood-Flossmoor community, from Starbucks to Panera and several local shops as well. However, there's plenty of open space in the plaza, waiting for the right business to come along and call it home. One such location is the former home of The Little Colony, located at 18360 Governors Highway. The location was a children's and linens store, but now sits vacant and ready to lease. Starting on May 15, both Homewood and Flossmoor residents will not be allowed to water their lawns for most of the day, until September 15.
Crimp your hose, Homewood-Flossmoor area residents, water restrictions are returning. Beginning on Wednesday, May 15, residents in both villages will need to begin following their respective village's water conservation rules. In Homewood, residents are not allowed to use sprinklers to water their lawns or shrubs, between the hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 15 to September 15. However, watering systems such as low-volume drip, spray or bubble emitters, or hand-held hoses are allowed. Flossmoor residents must follow similar rules for the village's lawn sprinkling ban, which also goes into effect May 15. The Homewood Baseball and Softball organization will hold its opening day parade, festivities and first games on Saturday, April 20. The all-day event kicks off at 11 a.m., with opening games taking place at 1:15 p.m.
Spring time is here and with it comes the start of baseball season. Local children are getting ready to lace up their cleats, strap on their batting gloves and step up to the plate at local fields across the area. On Saturday, April 20, the Homewood Baseball and Softball will kick off its season with its annual parade and opening day ceremonies, along with a full slate of games. The parade steps off at 11 a.m. and will begin at Richard D. Irwin Park, before heading down Ridge Road to the Izaak Walton Baseball Fields. The parade will force the closure of Ridge Road from Gottschalk Avenue and Highland Avenue, beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting until after the parade. Stacey McHale, 36, had pulled to the side of the Tri-State Tollway in 2010 to check on a flat tire when she was struck and killed by a truck, according to a report.
The family of a Homewood woman killed on the Tri-State Tollway in 2010 has received an $8 million verdict in their favor, Sun-Times Media reports. Stacey McHale, 36, of Homewood, had pulled to the side the tollway on Feb. 15, 2010 because of a flat tire, according to the report. While checking the tire, the mother of two children was struck and killed by a semi truck. Authorities say Blake Springsteen of unincorporated Cook County beat and stabbed his mother before leaving her in a ditch in Crete. He is due in Chicago bond court Saturday.
An unincorporated Cook County man accused of stuffing his mother in a car trunk and stabbing her is expected to appear in a downtown Chicago bond court on Saturday. Blake Springsteen, 22, was charged with attempted murder on Friday. Cook County authorities allege Springsteen bound his mother, drove her to Crete in the trunk of his car, stabbed her multiple times and left her in a ditch in Crete on Monday. Springsteen was apprehended Thursday night by Flossmoor police after a tip from a local resident helped end a four-day manhunt. Area police released a notice to residents Monday night that they were searching for a "dangerous" man involved in a domestic violence incident. On Thursday, police announced Springsteen's arrest.
