Representatives from Homewood’s other taxing bodies appeared at the Dec. 11 meeting to ask the board to table a vote to spend nearly $1 million in economic development so a joint meeting could be held to discuss the decision.
Homewood trustees passed an agreement to provide $900,000 in TIF money for the development of a new downtown hotel, but not without considerable opposition from the village’s other taxing bodies. Their chief complaint? The village failed to give them a fair warning of such a large impending financial decision. "La Banque" Hotel in downtown Homewood is inching closer to reality as trustees commit financial backing to the project.
Homewood trustees voted Tuesday night to give $900,000 and a recommendation for Class 8 tax designation to Ravisloe Country Club owner Dr. Claude Gendreau, all for the development of a boutique downtown hotel. The two incentives are separate and distinct, Grandeau’s financial consultant Don Peelman said. The Class 8 is in response to anticipated high operating expenses, as are custom in the business, says Homewood Community Development Director Paula Wallrich. The designation will reduce his assessment to ten percent of market value for the first ten years, 15 percent in the 11th year and 20 on the last, with an opportunity to renew. Homewood Village President Richard Hofeld and the village trustees will meet at Homewood Village Hall on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Casino Lobbyist Trustees will vote to hire Alfred G. Ronan, Ltd. to represent the village's interest in developing a joint casino with East Hazel Crest. The agreement specifies a one-year contract with the lobbyist beginning Jan. 1, 2013 at a rate of $3,000 per month. Some exciting new places are coming to Homewood, but is this what our community needs?
In a time where vacancies are prevalent and local shops are closing their doors for good, things seem to be looking up for Homewood. Today, we announced the Central Business District will soon be home to a boutique hotel. The hotel would put Homewood in the same league as St. Charles and Geneva—and would make it the only South Suburb with a boutique hotel. On top of that, the old Bakers Square building in the Southgate business district is going to become “The Cottage on Dixie,” a fine dining restaurant, and Chipotle will be moving in on Halsted before the year’s end. All these changes will undoubtedly have an impact on the community, though. Will a chain like Chipotle take away from the local feel here? What will the Central Business …
