Candidate Robin Kelly says Sen. Toi Hutchinson is only in favor of a gun ban now because it’s politically convenient.
Second District congressional candidate Toi Hutchinson currently supports Obama’s gun ban, but she didn’t always feel that way, according to a Chicago Tribune report. The Trib recently pulled an NRA questionnaire revealing multiple "A" ratings for Hutchinson, who opposed a gun ban in her 2010 election. Hutchinson says the Sandy Hook shooting is what made her change her position on banning weapons, but candidate Robin Kelly isn’t buying it. Unlike Hutchinson, Kelly received an “F” rating by the NRA, an achievement she’s very proud of. “The only thing that ‘changed’ for Toi Hutchinson is that she entered a race for Congress where her past support of the NRA’s agenda was no longer politically convenient,” Kelly said in a press release. “It’s …

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle gave a simple explanation for her surprising endorsement.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is endorsing State Sen. Toi Hutchinson in the 2nd Congressional District election, CBS Chicago reports. Preckwinkle chose Hutchinson over Robin Kelly, who was her chief administrative officer for two years. Preckwinkle said Hutchinson is in prime position to win the Feb. 26 primary election, mainly because her legislative district is in the 2nd Congressional District. The board president said she has no problems with Kelly, but went with Hutchinson because she believes the state senator is the "strongest candidate." “There are lots of qualified people in this race but I felt it was important to make a choice and Toi Hutchinson will be the strongest candidate,” Preckwinkle told The Associated …

Five Democrats threw their name in the hat to replace former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. this morning.
The ballot battle began this morning, with five candidates having filed candidacy petitions before 8 a.m. to join the 2nd Congressional District special election race. Chicago's 9th Ward Ald. Anthony Beale, filed first, but was followed by state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, whose office is in Chicago Heights, according to the Chicago Tribune. Also filing before 8 a.m. was former state Rep. Robin Kelly, state senate-elect Napoleon Harris and Clifford Eagleton of Harvey. Meeting the early deadline means the candidates will have a shot at appearing at the top of the ballot. A lottery will be held next Tuesday to determine which of the five early-filing candidates will take the top spot. Filing for the highly-coveted seat ends Monday. No Republicans …

Newly drawn maps bring a Cook County district into some of Frankfort and New Lenox. Republican Tuck Marshall wants to challenge the Democratic incumbent from Olympia FIelds.
Tuck Marshall, a Frankfort man who recently had an unsuccessful run at the Will County Board, announced his intentions to run as a Republican against Democratic incumbent Toi Hutchinson, of Olympia Fields, in the 40th Senate District. Newly drawn district maps extended Hutchinson's reach to portions of Kankakee and Will County, including the southern parts of Frankfort and New Lenox. Her district still represents parts of Flossmoor and Chicago Heights as well. "I bring a Will County perspective," Marshall said. "We’re more rural. People have the right to be represented. What’s happened here, we have no federal representation. "(Hutchinson is) probably a very nice lady, but she's in that same party. How could she have anything to do with us…

Frankfort Republican Tuck Marshall is slated to run against Democratic incumbent Toi Hutchinson, of Olympia Fields, for the 40th District state Senate seat. Newly drawn maps bring Hutchinson's district into some of Frankfort and New Lenox.
Fearing a Cook County takeover of Will County politics, a Frankfort man is planning to run for a state Senate seat against Democratic incumbent Toi Hutchinson of Olympia Fields. J.C. "Tuck" Marshall, 65, was slated by the Will County Republican Party to oppose Hutchinson in the 2012 election for Illinois' 40th District Senate seat. Newly drawn district maps extended Hutchinson's reach to portions of Kankakee and Will County, including the southern parts of Frankfort and New Lenox. Her district still represents parts of Flossmoor and Chicago Heights as well. New maps also brought longtime Chicago Democrat Bobby Rush's district into the south suburbs. "I bring a Will County perspective," Marshall said. "We’re more rural. People have the …
