Extra Points: Sherman Paves the Way for H-F Success

Vikings' guard helps his team stay perfect in Southwest Suburban Blue with strong play on both ends of the floor.

When things go well for junior guard Tyrone Sherman, they also go well for Homewood-Flossmoor. Friday night they went well early and often for both Sherman and the Vikings. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound floor leader started the league game at Joliet West with a quick 3-pointer. Sure enough, he was on his way to a fast start–5-for-6 shooting in the first half--and so were the Vikings, who led 31-15 after two quarters before finishing off the Tigers 52-30 to remain a perfect 8-0 in the Southwest Suburban Blue. “Whenever I hit my first shot, I get fired up,” said Sherman, who finished with a game-high 16 points. “When I hit my first three, it got everybody ready to go and it gave everybody energy.” Vikings coach James McLaughlin, whose team is now…

Vikings Proud to Reach Proviso West Finals

Homewood-Flossmoor boys not satisfied after placing second, could welcome Tim Williams back by the end of the season.

HILLSIDE–Throughout the Proviso West Tournament, Homewood-Flossmoor coach James McLaughlin brought up history to motivate his team. The Vikings have a rich history at the storied tournament, highlighted by the 2003 championship, which featured a sophomore named Julian Wright, now a member of the Toronto Raptors in the NBA. This year's team fell just short of matching that, falling in overtime, 54-50, in the title game Thursday to Benet Academy, the third runner-up finish for the Vikings in 13 tournament appearances. But it added another chapter to the program's lore, nonetheless. "Obviously, not getting the first place trophy is disappointing, but at the same time, we're proud of what we did," McLaughlin said. "It was a great four-day run …

Vikings Fall in OT to Benet in Championship Game

Homewood-Flossmoor finishes second in the Proviso West Tournament after its 54-50 overtime defeat to the unbeaten Redhawks.

HILLSIDE—Anytime two boys basketball teams as talented as Homewood-Flossmoor and Benet Academy get together, it usually comes down to the little things to determine a winner. Regulation wasn't enough time to decide the Proviso West Tournament championship between those two clubs Thursday. But Benet did just enough down the stretch to secure the title with a 54-50 win over the Vikings. Tyrone Sherman had a chance to win the game for H-F at the end of the fourth quarter, but his three-pointer at the buzzer came up short. He then had a chance to tie the game with 11 seconds left in overtime, only to have 7-foot Benet center Frank Kaminsky swat the ball away to preserve the Redwings' win. "We had opportunities," H-F coach James McLaughlin said…

Vikings Reach Proviso West Title Game for First Time Since 2007

Homewood-Flossmoor boys roll past Proviso East in the semifinals behind another stellar Julian Lewis performance Wednesday.

HILLSIDE—Despite an 8-2 record, program prestige and a senior who was the team's star a year ago, Homewood-Flossmoor's boys basketball team has somehow flown under the radar this season. That is changing as the Vikings continue to storm through the star-studded Proviso West Tournament this week. H-F steamrolled past previously unbeaten Proviso East, 68-47, to reach the tournament championship game for the first time since 2007. The Vikings will face unbeaten Benet Academy, a winner over defending Class 3A state champion Hillcrest in the other semifinal, Thursday at 8:30 p.m. "It's been a battle," H-F coach James McLaughlin said. "We've been trying to do everything that we need to do to help our kids get better and grow. We took some lumps …

Vikings Survive Late Scare to Beat Proviso West

H-F boys move on to Proviso West tourney semifinals Wednesday against Proviso East.

HILLSIDE—Homewood-Flossmoor boys basketball coach James McLaughlin preaches to his team the need to play 32 minutes every night. "Today, we played 29," McLaughlin said. Fortunately for him and the Vikings, they did enough work in those first 29 minutes to hold off a furious Proviso West comeback in the final minutes of Tuesday's 82-73 Proviso West Tournament quarterfinal win. The Vikings held a 75-63 lead with 2:42 to play, but they turned the ball over six times to fuel a 10-0 Proviso West run that cut the lead to 75-73 with 52 seconds to play. But the Vikings were able to stabilize from there to advance to Wednesday's 8:30 p.m. semifinal game against Proviso East, which stunned Louisville recruit Wayne Blackshear and previously unbeaten …

Vikings Get Proviso West Tourney Started with Win

Homewood-Flossmoor is hot from the outside in a 59-42 win over St. Patrick on Monday.

HILLSIDE—When a basketball team has a layoff like the one Homewood-Flossmoor's boys basketball team was coming off of Monday, a little rust is to be expected. But after not playing for 17 days, the Vikings looked refreshed and rejuvenated in their 59-42 win over St. Patrick in the first round of the Proviso West Tournament on Monday. H-F hit 9 of 15 three-point attempts in the game, including a combined 9-of-13 output from David Fatoki, Delvon Rencher and Tyrone Sherman. "When you have that much time off, they say you're going to be a little bit rusty, but we simulated games in practice, and they became pretty competitive," Homewood-Flossmoor coach James McLaughlin said. "Obviously, when you have that much time off, you have to make the …
