Second Congressional Candidate Marcus Lewis says leaked audio of a Matteson pastor’s sermon is evidence that the current congressman is campaigning through religious figures, and that this particular church’s tax-exempt status should be in question.
This article was updated at 11:55 a.m. on Oct. 31, 2012 to include information about the 501(c)(3) tax exemption. Controversy erupted on the Patch comment boards Tuesday when we released an audio recording of Matteson Rev. Andrew Singleton Jr. vocalizing his support for the re-election of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. The recording now has independent opponent Marcus Lewis contending that the pastor’s speech may be in a violation of the law and that Jackson is using religious authorities as a sneaky campaign trick. "He's campaigning across the pulpit," Lewis said. "His church can and should lose its tax-exempt status because of that." An FBI investigation and the mental health drama surrounding U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. have not threatened his re-election to Congress, according to a poll released today.
Jesse Jackson Jr. shows a commanding lead over his two challengers, with 58 percent of likely voters saying they would send the beleaguered congressman back to the U.S. House for two more years, according to a new We Ask America poll. Republican Brian Woodworth would be the choice of 27 percent of voters, and independent challenger Marcus Lewis is favored by 15 percent. Woodworth said he will not read too much into the poll, but took an optimistic view of the results. "A poll is a just poll and not an indicator of success or loss," Woodworth said. What started as an attempt to clarify comments about mental illness in political candidates has turned into an online meet and greet for congressional candidate Marcus Lewis. Lewis, a longtime employee of the United States Postal Service, will appear on the November ballot as an independent candidate, and his frequent commenting on Patch articles ensures that a few more people will already be familiar with the name.
