Top-ranked Bulldogs look to set aside regular-season ending setback. Keep an eye on No. 4 Marian Catholic.
1. Richards (28-1): Best thing ever? Or worst possible scenario? Antioch dealt Richards its first loss (3-1 in 8 innings) at the Stone City Jamboree. Now, the Bulldogs will be free of the pressure that comes from trying to protect an undefeated record. They’ll open postseason play vs. Chicago Vocational or Chicago Hyde Park at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The regional semifinal game will be played at Chicago Maria High School. Last week: No. 1. 2. Sandburg (24-5): Lora Olson struck out 10 in a 4-0 victory over Bartlett. She also had two hits and drove in one run. Amanda Barna smacked three doubles. The Eagles meet Joliet Central or Shepard at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Shepard Regional. Last week: No. 2. 3. Oak Forest (25-4): A conference loss, a …

Spartans get clutch hitting, turn big defensive play to pull out a dramatic victory over the host Vikings.
It was an exciting game between rivals Marian Catholic and Homewood-Flossmoor on Tuesday. When it appeared one team had the momentum, the other would take it right back. In the end, it was Shannon Dee’s two-out RBI single that plated Shawna Sadler in the top of the seventh inning that lifted the Spartans to an 8-7 win. The Vikings were the home team and had the last at-bat, and they had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Trailing by one with runners on second and third with two outs, Sydney Battle came to the plate with a chance to tie or win the game. Battle had homered earlier in the game, but further heroics were not to be, as she hit a sharp liner to Spartans third baseman Alexandra Nickel to end the game. …

Marian Catholic 8, H-F 7. Despite committing four errors, Spartans find a way to beat the Vikings.
Touching All the Bases: Despite committing four errors and allowing Homewood-Flossmoor to score six unearned runs, Marian Catholic did what all good teams do--it found a way to win. The Spartans edged H-F 8-7 in a softball battle between old rivals on Tuesday. With the score tied 7-7 in the top of the seventh inning, Shawna Sadler led off the with a single was sacrificed over to second by Alexandra Nickel. Shannon Dee delivered the game-winning single with two outs to lift the Spartans. It was a back-and-forth game as the Spartans scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Rachel Glenn. The Vikings took the lead with five runs in the fourth, but the Spartans came right back in the top of the fifth to take …

Sandburg 4, Marian Catholic 2. Eagles use Lora Olson's two-run homer to overtake Spartans.
Touching All the Bases: Sandburg starting pitcher Amanda Barna worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning of the Eagles' 4-2 softball victory over Marian Catholic on Wednesday. But, in the fourth, the Spartans cracked the ice. Marian third baseman Alexandra Nickel stood in with nobody on and one out. She took a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence for a solo homer to put her team up 1-0. But the Eagles would come roaring back in the home half of the fourth. After a leadoff double by shortstop Candice Koch, Lora Olson took a Rebecca Gray pitch into deep center for a two-run homer. The Eagles added a run when Jess Perkins came up with the eventual game-winning RBI double, and they cashed in on a series of errors in the …

Returning all-state catcher Lexi Bryant has Eagles sitting on top of Patch preseason power rankings; Andrew looks for Sister Act to play out as a big hit.
1. Sandburg (40-2 last year): The old adage about the rich getting richer applies here. The Eagles won the Class 4A state championship and return 10 players, including Kansas recruit Lexi Bryant. The senior catcher hit .500 with 15 homers. Laura Olson (Indiana) compiled an 18-0 record with a 1.00 ERA. And senior third baseman Jessica Perkins (Illinois) hit near the .375 mark. Opener: Saturday at Moline. 2. Andrew (32-5): The T-Bolts live in the world of a Sisterhood. Wisconsin recruit Katie Christner returns after hitting .434 with two homers, 12 doubles and 35 RBIs. She is a fixture at shortstop. Sister Kelly Christner covers plenty of ground in the outfield. And defense is her second-best attribute. She hit .559 with three homers, 15 …
