The funding comes in the form of a grant being included in next year's state budget.
State Rep. Anthony DeLuca has acquired new state funding for the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force. DeLuca said he convinced state legislatures to restore funding to the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force through a $100,000 grant being included in the Fiscal Year 2013 state budget. "As a member of the House Appropriations-Public Safety Committee, earlier this year I was able to successfully make the case for the restoration of state funding for this vital law enforcement organization, while my colleagues and I were making decisions about spending priorities," DeLuca in a press release. Created by the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police in 2000, the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force facilitates cooperation and …

South Suburban Humane Society is caring for seven dogs rescued from a Dolton dog-fighting operation.
Article updated on Dec. 7, 2012 at 9:41 a.m. Lorenzo's eye bulged out of its socket as he lay isolated in a back room at the South Suburban Humane Society (SSHS). He's a dog nice enough to cuddle up on a stranger's lap. But when it comes to other dogs, Lorenzo only knows “attack,” according to Emily Klehm, the shelter's executive director. That’s because Lorenzo was raised specifically to fight other dogs for human spectacle. And that’s exactly what he was doing at an old Dolton warehouse. Eight suspects were arrested in connection with the operation after Cook County Sheriff's police received a tip about the fights. Police notified SSHS about the dogs and investigators were sent to the scene, Klehm said. They returned with all seven …

A tortoiseshell short-hair cat that will watch TV with you, Kaylee could use a forever home this winter.
Meet Kaylee. She's a 3-year-old domestic short-hair mix with a long black tail, who serves as a wonderful lap warmer, according to South Suburban Humane Society staff. Kaylee lost her home when her owner became ill and was unable to care for her. Thanks to a friendship with her cage-mate at the shelter, it appears Kaylee gets along well with other cats. Kaylee isn't needy or attention-starved but can be affectionate toward people, according to SSHS staff. Kaylee has been spayed. To learn more about Kaylee, visit her listing on the South Suburban Humane Society's (SSHS) website! PLEASE VISIT THE SSHS LISTING IN OUR PATCH PLACES DIRECTORY

The community event, focused on bringing people of all diversities together, will be held on April 25 at Rich South High School at 6:30 p.m.
The long-standing tradition of South Suburban Diversity Dinners will be celebrating its 15th Anniversary next week at Rich South High School in Richton Park. Among food and dialogue, original Freedom Fighter Thomas Armstrong will be speaking at the event. South Suburban Diversity Dinner Co-founder and Chairperson Robin Kelly says this is different than the usual format, when a host family invites 8 to 10 people of different ethnicities, creeds, etc. over to their home for a night of dinner and discussion. "This year it's like a family reunion," Kelly said. "Everyone who's ever participated is invited back." Betsy Williams has been hosting Diversity Dinners at Rich School for years now and is involved with the preparation of the program. …
