The U.S. Postal Service will end Saturday mail delivery by Aug. 1.
The U.S. Postal Service Wednesday morning announced it will eliminate Saturday delivery of mail by Aug. 1. The current six-days-per-week mail delivery business model is “no longer sustainable,” according to the U.S. Postal Service. Continued economic struggles and the increasing use of the Internet for communications and bill paying by consumers are among the key factors that lead to the decision. Saturday is also the lightest mail day of the week. “We must change in order to remain an integral part of the American community for decades to come,” reads a message on the U.S. Postal Service website. U.S. Postal Service rate hikes go into effect Jan. 27.
The cost to mail a letter is set to rise slightly later this month, after rate changes go into effect Jan. 27, according to the U.S. Postal Service. Stamp prices will increase one cent, from 45 cents to 46 cents, to mail one-ounce letters. This brings the cost of a standard 20-stamp book up from $9 to $9.20. Forever stamps, purchased for 45 cents before the price hike, are always good for mailing a one-ounce letter anytime in the future regardless of price changes, according to the U.S. Postal Service. The cost for letters weighing more than one ounce will stay the same, at 20 cents for each additional ounce, according to an announcement from the postal service. We're even going to be paying up to 4 percent more for groceries. And you can now add the cost of mailing a letter or package to the list of increases this month. While a regular letter or post card will only cost a penny more, rates to ship some package are going up 6 percent. As an affordable means for Americans to send and receive correspondence and packages, often next-day, the USPS is important.
