Homewood Man Accused in Child Sex Assault Pleads Not Guilty

Hugh T. Copeland, 71, pleaded not guilty Wednesday, Nov. 7 to 18 counts of felony charges related to the alleged sexual assault of a child over a two-year period.

A 71-year-old Homewood man pleaded not guilty Wednesday, Nov. 7 to 18 felony counts of criminal sexual assault and abuse stemming from allegations that he abused a juvenile over two years. Hugh T. Copeland has been in custody since Oct. 3 on a $300,000 D bond, which means he would need to have $30,000 to be released. Dressed in the customary khaki-colored Cook County Department of Corrections garb, Copeland entered his plea alongside his attorney Wayne Johnson in Judge Michele Simmons' Markham courtroom. Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Bagby will be prosecuting the case and counsel exchanged evidence as they begin the pre-trial discovery phase. Arraignment Set for 71-Year-Old Homewood Man Accused of Child Sex Abuse

The arraigment of a 71-year-old Homewood man who has been accused of sexually assaulting a child over a two-year period has been set for next month. Hugh T. Copeland has been in custody since Oct. 3 on a $300,000 bond. He appeared in a Markham courtroom before Cook County Judge Darron E. Bowden at a brief hearing Wednesday, Oct. 24; two attorneys filed their appearance for his defense. Just as Copeland was being led out of lock-up, with a pronounced limp and in khaki-colored Department of Corrections garb, a sound that could have been a laugh or a cough emerged from the galley.
